I still think the Flames will push for Mercer in any Devils deal as will any other GM selling a high profile goalie.

Wasn’t the rumour devils wanted Pospisil in the deal with Markstrom?
As for holtz being in deal, I really have no interest in him coming to flames. So I don’t think flames really messed up by taking the devils deal.

You have to feel for Fitz.
Sometimes a man just wants to make a trade for a top tier goalie and a breakout rookie in exchange for an asset the other team doesn't want, and lo and behold the other side is being all 'that's not enough'
How's a man supposed to build a team in this day and age?

I can see why New Jersey would want to protect the pick, its not like they are a consistent playoff team.
They do need better goaltending, but Markstrom has had some issues with injuries the last few years as well.
I really can't see us getting a 1st rounder for him.

Devil's may not be able to sign him anyway.
Mercer is an RFA and the Devils have some pretty big holes to fill in places of need. I doubt his next contract (bridge) is less than 3.5 million. That's money they don't have to tie into another winger.
With Holtz still on his ELC, I can see the Devils keeping him and moving on from Mercer. It's not like they have many options, I mean they could try and get rid of Palat but good luck with that.
With all this being said, Mercer is for sure on the table but it would take Markstrom retained plus another asset to get him.

I'd take Mercer straight up for Markstrom at this point.

Wonder if the flames end up offer sheeting Mercer. 4.29AAV costs a 2nd round pick. Even if the devils match it, you could structure it to get him to UFA which they may not be interested in doing

I would doubt Conroy is the type to do that and potentially burn a bridge. Despite Fitzgerald screwing around with him, he still gave him a piece of the pie with the Tanev return for holding a minimal amount of salary. I don’t think he’d ideally want to go that route.

No. I proposed Pospisil in a mock trade because Fitz said he wanted a winger that had more edge to him in an interview. Someone else on here before mentioned the Devils like Pospisil

I hope Buffalo comes sniffing around for a goalie. In light of hiring Ruff yesterday we now know their management isn't thinking clearly at the moment.

Haha, I'm going to say the Devils say no, since you asked.
If that's the return you're hoping for I can't wait to see your posts in the trade thread when it happens

Flames would have to include Huberdeau to even things out

The return Nashville wanted for Saros before they decided he was off market was Mercer plus a 1st, plus a prospect. Boston can use some help going forward up the middle and on wing, guess what they are going to ask for? It seems teams that have that #1 goalie are targetting Mercer in the return and NJ is hesitant to include him. That's fine but have fun with Jake Allen as your #1 next year. Mercer is going to need to get paid soon and he isn't really a key component for the Devils moving forward. I would not be surprised at all to see the base of a deal being around Markstrom and Mercer with other pieces involved to balance it out.

I kind of get why they would be hesitant to include him for Markstrom due to Markstrom's age.
But for Saros or Ullmark I don't get why they'd be so hesitant to include Mercer.
Lots of potential...but he also was playing 3rd line winger for them for much of this season. And you have Hughes / Hischier as your centers for the foreseeable future.
Get the goalie like Saros or Ullmark and you have a chance to win the cup with or without Mercer.

2nd and Mercer for Marky no retention
1st and Holtz for taking Palat
Seems pretty balanced to me

Well the ask for Saros was ridiculous by all accounts, it was one GM saying to the other you can have him if you pay a kings ransom because they don't want to actually move him. I don't think that narrative has changed, the Preds want to keep Saros long term and it would take something crazy to pry him out of Nashville. I agree with you on Ullmark, taking being a Flames fan out of the equation that is the goalie I would target if I was Fitz over Markstrom.
