Old Monahan was always an illusion, but I'm also biased. I'd been calling him a creation of Gaudreau's abilities for years.
outside of injuries he probably scores 25 goals a season without JG and with him he can get 35-40...so yes he benefited but so did Lindholm and so did Tkachuk.
are they also illusions?

Players are both Canadian. I think that bodes well.
Does Quebec count in this instance? PLD doesn’t seem to be enjoying his Canadian prairie experience. I don’t know if Huberdeau has a desire to play in Montreal, but I do know they’re trading flip flops and shorts for pants and shoes, so it’ll be very interesting to see how this all plays out.
Sorry, but you’re not going to convince me that one year of Huberdeau is worth more than a guaranteed 8 years of Tkachuk. I agree with you that Huberdeau is the better player and has an easier cap hit to swallow, but all things being equal, 8 years of Matthew Tkachuk beats a one year rental of any player in the NHL IMO.
Eight years of a player who won't sign with you is worth...nothing. Given that MT wasn't going to re-sign with the Flames ANY return is good. (For evidence of that see: Gaudreau, John)
If Treliving says this was by far the best trade available then I believe him. I mean, just looking at the names involved, the shock value would leave the average person thinking Treliving robbed Zito at gun point.
But once contract terms are put into play, I think it starts to shift toward Florida. Now obviously Treliving can still extend the others and tilt it back heavily in his favor, but as of right now, we’re renting Huberdeau and Weager for a year who could theoretically still fetch the Flames a nice return now or at the deadline. So there’s definite silver lining.
But yeah I’m with you, it still feels like the Flames subtracted 2 Huberdeau’s and only got one back. It’s hard to tell how the Flames will do this upcoming season as there’s still work for Brad to do, but yeah, I agree, finding a top line RW will could be difficult.
Wait and see. Tre working magic this week reminds me of this scene in Draft Day.

If you are looking at losing two Huberdeau's and only gaining one, you have to add Weegar into the mix. Lost two Huberdeau's but got a Huberdeau and top pairing d back.

Yup, it was one year of Tkachuk. Flames are lucky he was nice about it and knew it was time to cash in.

Not just that, also...
Johnny at 10.5
Chucky at 9.5
= 20M of cap space committed to 2 players
Compared to
Huberdeau at 5.9
Weegar at 3.25
= 9.15M of cap space committed to 2 players
Difference of almost 11M in cap space for this upcoming season, allowing the team much more flexibility heading into the coming weeks & months.

I think Kadri makes the most and easiest sense there but that takes two to tango. Otherwise a trade could work. I’d be shocked if Monahan was here to start the season same with Lucic.

Player for player, I just cant imagine there being a better deal on the table. If things don't work out, at the end of the day Huberdeau and Weegar will fetch a haul in March.
Yeah like I said, it’s the silver lining out of everything, these guys can still fetch a bounty now or at the TDL, assuming Treliving doesn’t keep them for just an average playoff run. But again, I was in the rebuild camp, so I was hoping for an A+ type prospect that the Flames could’ve groomed for a decade +
