I think unless we draft top 3, I don't think our first rounder will play in the NHL next year.

We need a RW. Based on how it's looking that means Nylander or Gauthier. I want Gauthier.

I thought I'd read the young one is a bigger, more physical version with similar talent, no?

At this point, I don't care where the Flames draft... Monahan and Bennett were both picked outside the Top 3...and players like Nylander, Dubois and Chycrun have the potential to be the best player in this draft...meh, whomever the Flames choose becomes the new favourite, I'm eager to find out who it'll be

With the clarity of 5th emerging I'm starting to get my head around a tighter range for the first time since the playoffs looked lost in mid January.
Sure you can win the 1st, 2nd or 3rd spot but I'm starting to feel safer about top 7 which I think is key.
Big 3 with a lottery pick
Can't draft 4th (unlikely)
So it's become who's going to be there at 5,6,7 for me.
Makes it more interesting to start imagining draft day with real faces.

Dubois' late rise kind of scares me a bit as I'd prefer to see a consistent rise, but really it's over a long enough period to be legit so it's not a big deal.
I think I'm in the "Any of Dubois, Tkachuk, Chychrun, Sergachev and I'll be content" camp. I think I'd put Tkachuk last of those four, but that is probably just bias as a result of his dad

Well, that means our choice will be one of Dubois, Chychryn, Nylander or Tkachuk. I don't really see any other realistic possibilities. Something weird could happen, like Pulj could slide to 5 I guess because a couple teams have their heart set on a C or a D.

All of those guys would be terrific prospects. Add in Nylander and Juolevi, as possibilities as well, and there should be a fair bit to choose from where the Flames land.

Flames are drafting 2nd, I feel it in my bones.
Besides... Monahan at 6, Bennett at 4, Laine at 2. Its only natural at this point.

A touch off topic, but the entire first day of the draft is going to be an exciting ride. Not only do we have the pick itself to look forward to but you just know the day will be buzzing with trade speculation, and with the Flames in need of a goalie and RW this should be a lot of fun.

Should be exciting. Friedman confirmed the expansion draft details will be finalized by then, so there should be a lot of moves with that in mind. Welcome your new starting goaltender, Marc Andre Fleury...

More than a RW (for Johnny/Monny) IMO we need a dominant two-way winger who can pick Bennett up rather than drag him down. That's what Dubois can be IMO, the Hossa to his Toews. So can Laine and Puljujarvi while being right shots as a bonus. I'm not sure Gauthier or Nylander fit the bill. They both seem like good pieces for the Monahan line but don't solve the Bennett line.

You wouldn't prefer Ekblad?
Just cause we got a decent player doesn't mean draft position doesn't matter. The higher you draft the more choice you have. It sucks that we're outside of the top 3 and meaningless wins don't change that. If we fail to get an impact player in this draft then there is no denying that despite some good individual performances, this was a trainwreck of a season overall.

From what I've read Alex may be slightly less skilled overall. But Alex is bigger. I don't think it's a massive difference in skill level. Alex is probably top 5 in this draft in terms of pure offensive talent.
I still prefer Tkacuk and Dubois over Nylander. We have a lot of skill on the team with Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett and Shinkaruk but we lack a top two line powerforward with size unless Colborne and Ferland continue to take steps forward. We need some big, strong, physical guys with a high skill level if we want to go anywhere in the playoffs in this division.

I agree.
Some are too focused on a RW for Gaudreau-Monahan. Those guys can produce already and are already a good line.
What we need more is a partner to play with Bennett that really helps to elevate his game.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Blank
Blank - Backlund - Frolik
Blank - Bennett - Blank
Bennett is the one who needs to find a player that fits on his wing - or if it's Matthews then Bennett shifts to be the winger on his line. You have 3 strong pairings of players like that and then you can easily fill the holes with other young players, current roster players and UFAS.

I had Bennett 1st overall for most of last season, was thrilled when the Flames picked him. He's going to end up being a better piece then Monahan, Hamilton, Brodie, and yes, Johnny Hockey.
Your last sentence is just being panicky. We're in prime position to get an impact player, even if it's outside the top 3 or 5.
