Handwashing regularly is what’s important not handwashing after the bathroom. But by handwashing everytime you go to the bathroom you ensure regular handwashing.

Also go read the legs thread again and linked research. I was 100% correct on that one.
Just pokin' fun, smelly legs.

Do you feel the same way about telemarketers?

I’m actually bothered by telemarketers a lot less. The phone ringing doesn’t freak the dog out, and I can deal with the call with a brief “sorry, we don’t need any [windows/air duct cleaning/phone plans], have a great day!” Takes about 10 seconds.

Door-to-door solicitors are much more disruptive. The dog goes absolutely bananas, and since she’s big and kinda scary to strangers, someone has to grab hold of her by the collar and wrestle her into another room while another person goes to the door to deal with the person selling stuff. They start into their spiel, which is hard to interrupt without being a dick (which is why companies go to the expense of door-to-door sales). If I’m by myself, I’m doing this while holding my barking and growling large dog by the collar. And there’s close to zero chance I’m going to buy whatever they’re selling.

All told, the process is about 60 seconds of major household disruption, compared with 10 seconds of minor disruption caused by a telemarketer.

If you don't know the person and aren't expecting anyone, why even answer the door?

To make them go away so the dog stops freaking out.

Sounds like you could use a door to door dog trainer. That thing sounds out of control.

^^^this is exactly my line of thinking!!

honest question - for those (like me who can't stand door to door sales people) why don't you get a doorbell camera? we got one a few years ago and it awesome!
we're eating dinner and the doorbell rings... nope, not answering - they've got the lanyard id around their neck - not interested!

over the years i've found other ways to stop groups from coming back...
back before google when newspapers were where you got a lot of news i was regularly bugged by the local paper asking if i wanted a subscription. nothing seemed to work and then it came to me... "the honest reason i'm not interested is becuz i'm illiterate." that was the last time i heard from them
there's no need to be rude to jw's - the best way to get taken off their "call" list is to invite them to church! sure, i'll come to a service at your kingdom hall, but you have to come to a service at my church first. if you really want to make sure you're off the list include something like "i can't wait to introduce you to my friends in the 'xyz' ministry that i help lead" - that pretty much ensures a lifetime of no calls.
have a close family member that is in their industry...
sorry, my brother-in-law is a painter and he paints my house
sorry, my brother-in-law does window and gutter cleaning
sorry, my brother-in-law owns a yard maintenance company and we use him

Yeah, we were never able to train that out of our dogs. They lose their minds every time. Now if a hardwood refinishing company came to the door…

Yes, I’m aware of your religion. My soul is ok.
No, I don’t need your “make asphalt blacker” service, stop asking.

And above all, stop putting your damn fliers on the door the first day we’ve left for vacation! “Hey, guess which house is vacant.” Jackasses!

Last vacation I checked the cameras to see who put flyers on the door and how long they had been there. Turns out the first asphalt company put it up 2 days after we left, only to have another Asphalt company take it down a day later and put their own up.

Telemarketers

Meh

If I don’t know the number I won’t answer, if it is important you will leave a voicemail

And if you leave a voicemail I won’t check it until it auto deletes itself. Mission accomplished.

Turning off voicemail was the smartest thing I ever did, what a waste a voicemail is.

The only person that leaves me voicemails is my wife.

I never listen to voicemails.

I’ll answer if a car is parked in front. If not, I check through a window to see if it’s someone I know. My neighbours have a code; they ring the bell AND knock so I know it’s them. It’s the near-perfect system.

I open the door a titch, and then whisper "Hail Satan, what is the safe word?".

That usually gets them running.

It’s quite difficult to text the cookies and cakes I make for the neighbours.
