Finally.

Quote:
Ninety-six football fans who died as a result of a crush in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster were unlawfully killed, the inquests have concluded. The jury found match commander Ch Supt David Duckenfield was "responsible for manslaughter by gross negligence" due to a breach of his duty of care.
Police errors also added to a dangerous situation at the FA Cup semi-final.
The prime minister said the inquests had provided "official confirmation" fans were "utterly blameless".
After a 27-year campaign by victims' families, the behaviour of Liverpool fans was exonerated.

Nine jurors reached unanimous decisions on all but one of the 14 questions at the inquests into Britain's worst sporting disaster.
The coroner Sir John Goldring said he would accept a majority decision about whether the fans were unlawfully killed - seven jurors agreed they were.
When the conclusion of the unlawful killing was revealed, families were seen hugging each other in the public gallery and some punched the air.

What a day for all of those involved. 27 years is a crazy amount of time to have to fight for this. Hopefully they can have some closure now, they certainly deserve it.

The questions in full that the jurors had to respond to.

Lot of organisations being held responsible, namely South Yorkshire Police, SWFC and their engineers and the ambulance service.

A question #15 would not have been inappropriate. Has there been an attempted cover up of the event where facts were deliberately muddied and a conspiracy to mislead in order to present a case of fan wrongdoing at the expense of police negligence.

Yeah, hopefully there is some closure today but hopefully this kickstarts proceedings against those that were responsible particularly the cops.

This thing was a disgusting attempted cover up. 27 years is about the norm by British standards for the truth to out.

Thanks Bagor.

I don't think that I've ever shared this here but I will now;

I attended the Hillsborough semi final in 1988, the year before the disaster. I was in the stands (seats) above Lepping Lane. Looking down on the fans, it was obvious that there was major crushing then too, just nobody died. I remember telling my dad that there could be major problems here. I told a steward too about my concerns. I didn't take it any further though trusting that those in charge would deal with it.

The next year, I simply couldn't bring myself to attend the 1989 semi final. I had severe misgivings even though I had followed Liverpool both home and away all season long. After witnessing what I did the previous year at the same stadium I simply couldn't do it. To this day I think about this moment in time. I know there's little to nothing that I could have done to prevent this tragedy but I think about it. What if?

Hillsborough still affects me deeply after all these years.

This day has been a long time coming. I'm both happy and just so incredibly sad for the families.

I've read numerous accounts similar to yours which adds to my confusion as to why the FA hasn't been implicated particularly in light of Liverpool's request to have the game played at OT and knowing full well that if at Hillsborough the police were insisting in putting them in the LL end when they had the larger support?

I really don't get why the FA aren't one of the questions because it was their decision making that contributed to this.

FWIW now .. from the Taylor report.

Quote:
269. The FA were strongly criticised by the Football Supporters' Association and others for having imposed the Hillsborough venue on Liverpool for a second year running. The Liverpool supporters had to travel much further to Sheffield than their Nottingham rivals. The police required that if the match was to be at Hillsborough at all, Liverpool would have to have the west and north side accommodation. The disadvantages of that and the disparate numbers of home supporters of the two clubs have already been set out. Liverpool had had to knuckle under to the arrangement in 1988.They resented having it imposed in 1989. To hold the match at Old Trafford would have been a perfectly good and acceptable alternative. Indeed, the FA nominated Old Trafford as the venue for the replay should there be a draw at Hillsborough.
270. Mr Kelly, the FA's Chief Executive, sought to give reasons for preferring Hillsborough, but the only onewhich seemed to have any validity was that the1988 match had been considered a successfully managed event. He admitted that a telephone call from the Chief Executive of the Liverpool Club protesting and putting Liverpool's case had not been mentioned to the FA committee which finally decided the venue. Mr Kelly frankly conceded that "there was an element of unfairness" to Liverpool in choosing Hillsborough for a second time. I think the decision was ill-considered. No doubt in future the FA will be more sensitive and responsiveto reasonable representations.
And you're welcome and I am genuinely and sincerely happy for you and the people of Liverpool as a whole that you get some sense of closure and vindication today. I'm from a town and my father was in an event that went through a similar cover up and a tarnishing of the dead through lies so whilst I can't exactly identify what you all went through, I can appreciate your suffering, your frustrations and anger and your long drawn out fight for justice.

Sure we will argue and bicker and will probably continue to do so, but despite what Shankly says, this is beyond that. JFT96

I totally agree with you. I remember at the time that there was talk of OT being the venue and that Liverpool had requested such. I was relieved and hopeful that that was going to be the case as my feeling of trepidation was off the charts with the thoughts of Hillsborough. The FA should take some responsibility for this and it astonishes me to this day that they aren't part of the conversation.

Very well said. And a genuine thank you from me. I have to admit to being a little emotional today...

Stiliyan Petrov set for return to professional football after beating leukaemia and hopes to play for Aston Villa in the Championship

Stiliyan Petrov will make a return to professional football next season and wants to lead Aston Villa back into the Premier League. The midfielder was diagnosed with acute leukaemia four years ago but has been training with Villa’s Under 21s.

Petrov, 36, now believes he is fit enough to make a fairytale comeback to the professional ranks. He made his bombshell announcement at the launch of the Stiliyan Petrov Foundation golf day at The Belfry. Looking trim and fit, Petrov said: ‘I'm looking forward to a return to football again. I've told Aston Villa that I'm ready to start a pre-season with them. Obviously they will always have the first look.'

Petrov was diagnosed with the disease four years ago and went through three years of chemotherapy. He has remained close to Villa during that period and even had a spell of coaching the Under-21s with Gordon Cowans when Paul Lambert was manager. Since his illness he has raised £250,000 for cancer charities and will have a star-studded cast at his golf day on May 8, including former Villa manager Martin O’Neill.

Dele Alli charged with violent conduct and likely done for the season. Hopefully he learns from it because you can be sure it will have been noted by England's opponents this summer.

Not the first time he's over reacted.

^ I think that the other teams know he has a bit of this streak and basically try to goad him into doing something stupid. He's so good, but between these dirty plays and what I see as his constant going to ground trying to draw fouls he still has a large learning curve ahead of him.

Been a tough season for United. At a clear disadvantage to Leicester, too many games and a squad of individuals that have no experience of winning anything when you compare them to ... say Leicester and Spurs.

Sometimes LvG should just shut up.

Actually, I look forward to his press conferences. Only part of the weekend when the club provides entertainment for the fans.

I happened to catch the last 20-25 minutes of Watford and Aston Villa today. I like Deeney and Ighalo, but I kind of felt bad for Villa. I mean those poor fans were basically elated that they were going to win for a complete change this season, but then Deeney scores to tie it with about ten seconds to go in regulation time and adds the winner in injury time.

LVG's quotes about the difference between United and Spurs last week were better

Quote:
So I don’t think there is a lot of distance between Tottenham and Manchester United, but the distance is in points. They have won more, they are scoring more and that’s because they have more creative players.”
we are the same, they just win more and score more
