Read a bit of the Sven thread on HF Canucks....pretty much as expected.
"Great offensive instincts but soft"
"Just needs to round out his game to the defensive side of the puck"
"He's better than he showed last night"
"He needs to be used in the top 6, coaching staff better put him there"
"He will be top 6, mark my words"
"Great skater but needs to back check harder"

I hope they didn't ask him to back check or they'll be hearing from his dad.

Sportak is doing an AMA on Reddit. This is what he had to say about Sven --
Quote:
As for Baertschi. Here's my guess. I like Sven, but think he got a bit of sense of entitlement without truly achieving anything. He also doesn't play the really up-tempo game they want, and between those things, as well as not putting on size a couple of summers ago, got on Bob Hartley's bad side. After a while, though, I think even when Baertschi tried to do what was asked of him, he felt deep down he could do no right, didn't react right and earn it and it created a chasm too big to close.

And that fits with what Baertschi said recently (posted above). He doesn't seem to agree that he needs to add anything or alter his game at all. He believes he was drafted because of how he played in junior, and therefore that is how he needs to play.
It's certainly an odd mentality, and very well may determine where his career goes in short order.

I don't dislike the kid. That said, he is a perfect Canuck. There is a reason that nobody in a Canucks jersey has ever touched a cup.

I'm still a little sad that he didn't buy into the system here. I watched the kid in junior a number of times and he always looked like the best player on the ice. Even when he played against Seth Jones. I had high hopes for him, as did most.
Now that he's traded away, I'm merely interested in his progression to find out how it all plays out. It'll be interesting how it shakes out in the end, given his obvious skill but lack of commitment.

i also feel bad it didn't work out. My view, however, is that he lacks size, and his speed, puck skills, vision, aren't of high enough caliber to allow him to easily translate results in development/minor leagues to the NHL.
I think it is unfair to call out his attitude, work ethic, etc. I also think it is unfair to lay the blame on the flames coaching/management.
He doesn't have the size or tenacity to come in on an NHL 3rd/4th line and be effective. He doesn't have elite level speed/skill allowing him to step right in and play on a team's scoring lines. i think getting traded to a bottom feeder would have been the best thing for baertchi. A team with no expectations, that can give him time with skill players and top 6 minutes, to figure out how to be effective in the NHL, where immediate results aren't going to be expected would have been ideal. Unless vancouver considers next year a rebuilding year, which they don't, i have a hard time believing he'll get this opportunity to learn at the NHL level.

It's not like it didn't work out because there was a difference of opinions in how to play hockey, he just wasn't good enough...for the Flames at least. The Flames are building a team and a culture that leaves it all on the ice, does what it takes to win and knows that every part of the game is as important as the other. Sven didn't meet these standards and had to go. He may have a future with the canucks because.....well because they're the canucks. He just wasn't and isn't good enough for the Flames.

The fans on here are exactly like the Oilers fans from 2005-2007 about Robbie Schremp, 'awesome junior superstar that isn't given a fair chance", "he isn't given FAIR time on the top 2 lines", etc. Sven doens't SKATE or compete hard enough to be a star in this league, which he thinks he is. Rico Fata anyone.

I think not making the NHL this year will either kick Sven in the ass and he'll check his ego or he will be KHL bound in 2016-2017.

Lundmark was much more reliable.

Yeah, Lundmark at least tried to re-invent himself as an enrgy line kind of player when things didn't work out. He seemed like a pretty positive guy in general.

Right now Lundmark ranks higher in my memorable Flames list. He had that one great game in Detroit that left an impression. We'll see if I remember any of Sven's games 5-6 years from now.

LOL at the recent posts in this thread.
This is what I do when I buy a new gadget or vehicle. Read reviews on how the decision I made was a good one.. to make me feel better.
Rico Fata, Schremp, wth are you guys talking about.
This kids played under 82 NHL games and is around .5ppg
I hate the canucks as well but this is stupid. Sven is a decent prospect. Only a few months ago we voted him as a top 5 prospect on this very forum.
"entitled", "dad jokes" are all really classy flames fans. Hope he burns us so we realize its not ok to crap on a prospect publically. O wait - maybe hes just too weak psychologically.
And all the back check, soft etc. We have had players named Cervenka, Hagman, Huselius, Raymond and I would argue Gaudreau sucks defensively asides from his ability to poke check and stick lift using his sleight of hand to his advantage..
How different the tone of this thread would be if we just called up Sven today after he lead the baby flames to the playoffs only for him to score the game winner vs phx on the PP on a feed from monahan and stay up the rest of the season / playoffs taking Raymonds spot.
We'd be using different names than Schremp and Fata.
Its ok for a fan base to be butthurt because they basically spent 3-4 years developing a player only for him to return them a draft pick one full round lower than where they picked him.
The reason the winning response on this poll is we did ok considering the circumstances is 99% of flames fans know had we not publically called the kid out and pooped on our whole "earned never given" motto by throwing out Setoguchi, Galliardi, Shore, Jooris, Streete and others players who imo didnt deserve a spot more than sven.
Im dissapointed and its crappy asset management. Sven will play in this league. He will play in our division, our conference and bite us in the ass. I'm sure of it
We just neeed to hope our 2nd rounder can make an impact.
