I need to stop looking at this thread before lunch.

Any recommendations for best pizza by the slice downtown for lunch? I usually just go over to Verona.

Detroit Style is my favorite too...I miss POW and wish there was more Detroit-style around the city.

I don't get the hype of Pizza Culture. We've been going there for years because it was close and the service was friendly, but I never thought the pizza itself was anything more than a solid B. Definitely a pizza of convenience, not love.

We need a definitive list of Detroit style pizza places in the thread now that Red Top Cranston is closed.

Red Top and Connie & John's are the only two I know of. Little Caesar's deep dish is technically Detroit style but it's not good.

I just got some of the Motor City frozen pizzas which I've heard good things about, although frozen pizza is rarely anything but awful.

The Costco ones were a bit meh. They’re edible and everything, but the edge doesn’t come out crispy, it’s very soft and oily. It has potential, maybe there are some hacks to make it better.

I feel like you didn't cook it long enough.

We keep a couple on hand as they provide a decent meal in a pinch. We find them tasty and the best frozen option.

Pronto Pizza, two locations.

I've heard Verona has gotten better of late, it went way downhill a couple of years ago.

To each their own I suppose, but haven't had much luck with pizza from the Pronto near me. Their other items like sandwiches and pasta are usually pretty great though.

Maybe try putting the oven on broil for a minute or two at the end. That's what I do when I make homemade pizza to crisp it up.

Ate it yesterday, still my favourite pizza in town.

It may help, but I don’t think enough to make it a a viable Detroit-style pizza option. It definitely needs more sauce, cheese, and pepperoni though. Otherwise it’s sort of just some scant amounts of toppings on some soft focaccia-like crust. I followed the directions on the tray.

Ahh the broil button, where 75% of the time I use it I forget and burn the hell out of the food. I have to force myself to get a chair and watch it.

Bruno makes my favourite pizza too. Before he started Pronto, here is an article about Bruno by John Gilchrist from 2014

My office used to be by there and we went quite a few times. Imagine our surprise when we moved downtown and he opened up in the +15 the next building over.

Always crave and get two slices and feel like a slothy bag of crap in the afternoon. Probably why I needed a extra bypass as well.

Has anyone tried the pizza at Thorncliffe arena/community centre bar? I stopped in for a quick drink yesterday and 4/6 tables had pizza that looked very good. I feel like this place in general is a hidden gem I had no idea about.

How are there not more Detroit-style places around??? When done correctly, it's the best type of pizza out there.

I think cost is probably why it’s not as popular as it could be. People probably perceive the pizza to be small and wonder why it’s so pricy, even though a single piece is enough to fill you up.

In contrast to the Detroit, I went to Chicago a few weeks ago and was so excited to have this mythical pizza. I tried two places, and it was so bad. I'm not convinced a real Chicago Deep Dish place would remain in business here.

Real authentic Chicago deep dish is not for me.

Most "Deep dish" pizzas you get in Calgary are just a fluffy doughy pub-style pizza.
