Not everyone who is rabid about the Canadiens is in Montreal. They're also not rabid about the Canadiens unless they're winning in the playoffs. That's what I'm talking about. There are tons of fair weather fans currently cheering for the them. The easiest thing in the world is to cheer for a team when they're winning.
Are you seriously saying that all of the vocal Habs fans are with them year round? I'm not buying that, personally.

So they're bandwagon fans because they don't satisfy your impossible criteria?
Fair weather fans exist in sports, that's just the way it is.

If you think about it we almost all are bandwagon fans by definition.
I was born in Calgary and jumped on the Flames bandwagon.

They're also not rabid about the Canadiens unless they're winning in the playoffs. Yes, they become more rabid when they're are in the playoffs, welcome to 100% of NHL fanbases. Remember in 2004 when 40k people went to the Red Mile after every regular season and playoff game.....oh wait, that was the playoffs
There are tons of fair weather fans currently cheering for the them. The easiest thing in the world is to cheer for a team when they're winning. Yes, and this happens in every city. The true test of a "bandwagon" fanbase is how their attendance is during down years (see: 100% capacity for years and years in Montreal) and how much the team is in the local spotlight, which they always are in Montreal.
Are you seriously saying that all of the vocal Habs fans are with them year round? I'm not buying that, personally. In that city, a lot are yes. They ampt it up during playoffs, just like any number of cities
|
I get what you're saying, and when you cherry pick Montreal, some of what you're saying will be true, but it's a red herring, as you apply "Oh the city goes crazy during playoffs, where is that during the regular season" to literally ANY sports franchise in any sport, you're going to get the same phenomenon. That's not a Montreal Canadiens fan thing, that's a sports thing.

I was born in Edmonton, and yet I've hated the Oilers for as long as I can remember. It's probably the thing I like the most about myself.

Fair weather fans cheer for a team because that team is winning. I know people who have half a dozen jerseys from times they jumped on cup run bandwagons. Those are the people I have issue with. Right now, the Canadiens have a huge number of such people cheering for them. In '04 I was irritated with them cheering for the Flames too.

Wait, so you're changing what you were complaining about? You called them a bandwagon fanbase. This is just a message board dude, if you're just talking about fans on here then we're not even having the same discussion and maybe that's my fault.
Sorry, I thought you were talking about their actual fanbase in Montreal and calling them bandwagoners. That was my confusion, as Montreal has one of the most rabid, diehard fanbases in hockey, if not the most.
You're just talking about people on a message board jumping on a bandwagon as they talk hockey. Way different.

There are a lot of things in this thread which make my head hurt. Rose coloured classes are very thick on some posters.
I don't even know how I'd structure the issues I have. However there is one thing I just can't let go.
How in the bloody hell can someone say the Montreal Canadiens fans are a bunch of bandwagon jumpers?
The team is winning the city is buzzing, the team is losing you still can't get tickets with a rocking Bell Centre.
How many sports teams have university courses analyzing their fandom? http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=263480
Or have books written breaking down how the fandom of the team parallels a relgious fanaticism?

If the Montreal Canadiens fans are a bunch of bandwagon jumpers, holy sweet moses this board is full of fair weather, poser, pretend sports fan wannabes for the Calgary Flames.

It was one of the more head-scratching accusations I've ever read in this forum, for sure.

The irony is the vast majority of bandwagoners around here have jumped on the Bruins/Iggy bus. Which is all good. It's fun and even a bit nasty. But then, this rivalry must be the best in the NHL. If not, unsure what might be better.
Cheers to the 7th and unfortunately final game of an incredible series.

I apologize for not being completely clear. My objection is with the fans who don't typically cheer for the Canadiens but jump on the bandwagon whenever they have success in the playoffs. My initial mistake in phrasing "Canadiens fans" should have been "fairweather Canadiens fans." If you have read the exchange between me and flameswin, this should have been clear.
Although, from the comment above, maybe not.

I liked the leafs because of my family is from Ontario but after this year due to the fans over valuing there players on message boards and a passion for the calgary flames I no longer give 2 #### about the Leaves

Exactly.
You have to spend time here to really appreciate it - it's crazy. Young girls will debate who is better, Price versus Rask, as daily playground chit chat in July. I have never ever seen anything close to this kind of fan investment. It's unreal

I was a Leafs fan because of Curtis Joseph, who was the only reason I liked the team. Was really happy seeing him in a Flames jersey.

I'm sure it's easy to jump on the Habs hate bandwagon. I'm just not one of them. Have always hated them. Can't associate with their 'bandwagon' as some can't stand to understand. I think it's mostly a 'Canadian' thing, which I'll reserve to an 'each their own' kind of thing. Can't stand them and never will.
Can't stand so many quotations either. But if I was a Habs fan, I couldn't stand anything either.
