So what I gather from that blog is that any election officer can set up a "special ballot" station without getting any authorization from Elections Canada....and those votes will count.
Bizarre and really a bad precedent.

yeah, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with it, voting should take place in the ultimate of controlled environments.

Not only that, but in so doing you can also break at least two Elections Canada rules - no partisan materials at the polling station and every party can have a scrutineer present.
No real surprise that Iffy seems totally ok with this and thinks any commentary from the Conservatives is "repressing democracy". This coming from the guy why didn't even win a leadership contest to get the leadership of the Libs...

Jean Chretien is the Bill Clinton of Canada... some ethical issues, but things were good when he was in charge.

I understand that... And I know he had some support, but he didn't help Dion that much... And the Libs are running a campaign on ethics, If they are smart they should try to stay away from Chretien... Unless they are planning on shifting gears and going after the NDP?

Maybe it's to counter the Conservatives campaign of economics? (Although, Martin alone would probably be a better choice for that.)

Good times for Canada but the ethical issues were swept under the carpet until he left and Martin became the fall guy.

If you're in Calgary SW and not sure who to vote for, here is an independent candidate. I got a chuckle (from a few things) from the audio when you mouse over the links to the other pages at the top. http://members.shaw.ca/doulos/

The guy also has a website calling for a provincial public inquiry into the Naheed Nenshi mayoralty win.

I fixed your post.
But Jean Chretien represented everything that is wrong with politics.
I have absolutely no love for Trudeau or Chretien.

Just as an aside, I'm not sure where the 308 blog gets their numbers, but for Victoria they seem significantly off.
They have the NDP winning in a landslide in Victoria with a popular Oak Bay mayor running a distant third. They also have Tory Troy DeSouza who has lost multiple nail biters losing by eight points to a liberal rookie who replaced Keith Martin in Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca.
I would be shocked if DeSouza didn't win, and I would be shocked if the NDP won by more than eight points in Victoria (over the Liberal).

From their website...
Quote:
Basically, ThreeHundredEight's riding-level projection model is a proportional swing model. For example, if a party is projected to have 30% of the vote in a province, but had 25% of the vote in the 2008 election, all vote shares in each riding in that province for that party are increased by a factor of 1.2 (30 divided by 25). The model does this for each party in each riding, and then corrects the results to ensure that they add up to 100.
|
I have zero idea if this is a good or bad system, but at least they use a set formula which should at least make sure it is consistent country wide. Of course if it is a bad formula then none of their projections would hold any significance.

Oh really? I had no idea about that. The strange thing is that Larry was a really nice guy to me. Clearly I would never vote for him, but he has his opinions and goes about getting them out there in the right way. (Maybe not the most effective, but in terms of democracy. Oh, and excluding events like the whole Morgentaler debacle).
