What if Smith already knows that oil is being carved out, and as a result she’s just not willing to play ball? Like maybe she heard that this weekend and she knows that Alberta is going to get a better deal. Sure it sucks for all the other industries, but that would make sense as to why she wouldn’t go to bat.

Wouldn’t that make what she’s saying even more useless? Like why be that way if you know you aren’t gonna get tariffs, no need to throw a fit then.
I’m not saying traitor there is just zero value in saying this publicly on the eve of a trade war. She is making her position worse.
The US is unlikely to Tariff oil because it’s foolish for them to Tariff oil.
So on the 20th when the US doesn’t Tariff oil Smith is going to do a stupid victory lap. People will masturbate over her standing in front of an Alberta flag and she will have played everyone.
I believe the issue came to a head when other provincial leaders and the federal government stated they would be looking at all
Options with respect to a retaliatory tariff including oil
And gas exports when they do not have the ability to do so without Alberta agreeing. This cause Smith the react separating herself and Alberta from these comments.
I personally don’t care much for Smith and her policies but I am glad that Alberta has a premier to stand up for the people in the province and not roll over.

This can double as an answer to Dollarama Andrew Tate above, but uh… yeah, they actually do have the ability to do that. Exports are federal jurisdiction. They simply don’t because it’s better to work with provinces than against them unless… of course… the premier is being a child I guess. So lucky us.
If you want another piece of evidence, might I recommend the Constitution Act?
Basically, Smith is all bluster. She has repeatedly spoken complete nonsense way outside of her jurisdiction this week and all she did was make Canada look weaker. She even lied about why she was going down to meet Trump so that she didn’t have to follow any of the government procedures involved and didn’t actually have to produce any evidence of what happened. Said she was on vacation, engaged in “diplomacy” she had no authority to engage in, and got to make up whatever story she wanted to make up about it. She likely embarrassed herself and, unfortunately for us, embarrassed Alberta… again.
She’s not sticking up for Alberta. She’s making us look like idiots. And even worse the people who clap for her.

She has outlined a plan to have the province take over ownership of the oil prior to it being exported, through some sort of paper transaction.

Weird, I thought the NRTA did that 100 years ago. The province is going to do a paper transaction to take over ownership of the resources it already owns I guess. That does seem like a very Smith thing to do.
Or did you mean they would do a paper transaction to take over federal jurisdiction of exports regardless of who owns it? Because that’s not how that works.

I assume it means that Alberta will "buy" the oil just prior to it crossing the border into the US.
The feds can no longer tax it at that point, because there is no longer an entity to tax. That at least sounds like the theory.
IF the Feds truly try and throttle back on Canadian energy exports to the states, Its quite possible that the Enbridge Line 5 permits and regulatory approvals will come back into play. Lets not forget that this line supplies a large amount of the crude feed for the Eastern Canadian Refineries. Michigan would dearly love to be able to close in that pipeline but were beat back from the valve due to the Canadian federal govt intervention, citing a treaty drafted in 1977 about free flow of energy across the border. I highly doubt Canada wants to wade into this mess again
'In August 2022, the Canadian government again invoked a 1977 treaty with the United States in order to prevent the shutdown of the pipeline in Wisconsin, citing concerns about jobs, energy security, and the economy. Canada, which backs Enbridge, invoked the treaty for the first time in 2021 when the state of Michigan attempted to shut down Line 5 under the Straits of Mackinac due to environmental concerns.[37][22]'

Normally I would agree but if the rest of Canada is going to get screwed because of that orange goblin I would rather the whole country get together and stick him back.

They don't need Alberta to agree, the Federal government doesn't need Smith's ok here.

This is rolling over

I was originally going to vote for PP. Now that’s Carney’s likely in the ring, I’ll be voting for him.
A BA in international relations vs a Harvard graduate and an Oxford PhD in Economics… hmmm. Easy choice for me. I think Carney can get our country back to being financially sound. If Freeland is given the nod, I’ll likely vote PP.

Lone 5 flows to Sarina are not considered exports so they d be unaffected, so the only question would be whether the NGls that land in Michigan there would be affected.
