The Rome semi-finals have plenty of historical beef between the combatants:
Ruud vs. Rune
Tsitsipas vs. Medvedev

Was 2012 when Men's tennis peaked? What a year it was, Djokovic won the AO, Nadal won the French, Federer Wimbledon and Murray US Open as well each Slam final was against another member of the big 4. Not only that but the big 4 also won IW, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, the Olympics, Rogers Cup, Cincinnati, Shanghai, and the World Tour finals. Really the only big events they didn't win were the Paris masters and David Cup. Will we ever see another season like this again?

Leylah is playing a ITF event in Madrid this week and is into the semi-finals on Saturday. She takes on Sara Sorribes Tormo which is going to be a long, grinding match on the clay.
Genie Bouchard meanwhile was playing a WTA 125K event in Florence, Italy but was forced to retire against Sara Errani in the second set.

I thought they had a way of measuring individual and total strength of era? Elo system or something? It wouldn't surprise me if that year had the highest aggregate score for the Big 4 compared to any other period. I bet you Roger would have traded his Wimby for the gold medal.
in terms of new generation dominance, obviously Carlos' prowess on hard and clay is well documented, but grass happens so infrequently we don't yet have a read on where's he at until late next month. the guy right behind him is Rune and I think it's the same questions for him. I had assumed Sinner would complete the new holy trinity but lately he seems to have stalled out a bit on progression. and the 4th member...who knows, we might not even know his name yet.

Imagine if our Canadian kids had the mental strength of Carlos and Holger…but I guess that’s reserved for potentially generational talents

It's going to be fascinating to watch over the next 12-15 years how this all unfolds. Charlie and Holger are certainly laying down early markers that they're not afraid to play for the big titles, will Sinner and Felix (it's kind of crazy to think that Felix is the senior of the group at age 22) rise to the challenge. Starting to worry about Sinner though, every time he gets on a roll, he seems to get injured. I'm starting to worry more about Felix's serving than his backhand and that's not good.
Of course, guys like Tsitsipas, Rublev, and Medvedev still will have a thing to say about proceedings. Then there's old man Novak, we probably shouldn't try to put him out to pasture quite yet.

Just like Happy Gilmore learned to putt, Medvedev has learned to play on clay. 7-5 7-5 over Oikos and he gets Holger in the Rome final.

With Medvedev winning yesterday, that pushes Djokovic down to the 3rd seed at the French Open. Could end up in Alcaraz half for an amazing semi final showdown we all want to see
