It's honestly pathetic.

You forgot to mention the impact he had in the community here.
Gio is a good dude.

haha. Sick of how the Flames used to crumble in key situations and games because of leadership yet letting our effing captain off the hook in every post. Here is a bag
Irrational and unfounded hate for Giold.... hahahaha Look at what happened after he left? Career year for Tkachuk. Flames team is 10 fold better. Every single dman who started this year, played better than his last 2 years with us. We'll have more wins in round 1 of the playoffs this year than Gio had being our captain for 7 years. lol

Wow...I’ve read some terrible takes in the past, but this one.....
First off, was it not Darryl Sutter himself who came in last season and said Gio was the best defenseman on the team, then proceeded to promote him while at the same time demoting Hanifin? That’s what he thought of Gio and I’m of the exact same opinion as Darryl.
Secondly, the transformation of this team didn’t start this season, it started last season on the day they moved Gaudreau to a line with Lindholm and Tkachuk. The team completely hit a different switch both statistically and visually; it was night and day.
And here’s Gio’s stats after that change:
16GP - 3G - 6A - 9P - +15 - 55 shots - 24:47 TOI
Does this look like a guy who was over the hill or someone who couldn’t help a team? Heck, he’s certainly helping the Maple Leafs who went on quite the run since his arrival. Last I read, something like 8-1-1.
Gio is still a pretty damn good defenseman even at his age and anyone who knows and understands the game of hockey will see that. Just like Darryl noticed when he arrived here last season.

Good. Thoughts and prayers with all our playoff wins this year.
Are you guys that dense that i'm talking about Gio the aging, useless 36-38 year old player and not Gio the upstanding great guy citizen???
The guy was/is one of the best Flames ever for the team image and community. I think he is better than Iginla. He was my favourite Dman on the Flames for the first 7 years he was on the team when every one was creaming their pants for Phaneuf. I never wanted him to goto to the KHL and thought Sutter really messed that up and was worried he wouldn't come back to us.

Tkachuk is playing much better. He's also on the top line, which is a change in itself. He's also doing what supposedly Gio (and others) suggested he do, which is focus harder between the whistles and not afterwards. I suspect Sutter said much the same to him.

Everybody knows if Dominik Simon scored just 10 goals the Flames would have made the playoffs. Stupid Reider...I mean Simon.

One year makes sense to me - Tkachuk to UFA right away. Flames don't have much recourse outside of trying to limit salary in arbitration. Could also sign him half way through the season to an eight year contract in essence turning this into a nine year contract.
Eight years makes sense to me - solidifies roots, shows commitment by both parties, allows focus on hockey. Guarantees Tkachuk the most money and mitigates risk of injury or sudden drop off.
Four or five years makes some sense for reasons stated. Sets him up perfectly to get that 100M contract if he can avoid injury and/or regression. Gets paid for his peak despite falling out of it (based on average NHLer and short-sightedness of GMs) and brings him right to (or beyond) retirement age.
But two or three and six or seven years don't really make sense from Tkachuk's point of view in my opinion.
2/3 Doesn't set him up for the next contract which would likely want to be 7 years from all UFA destination teams which puts him at 33 or 34. He could pull a Backstrom/Pavelski/Wheeler stay productive and sign high value, couple year contracts, but then you could look at the obvious like Lucic and Neal who dropped off in that 29-33 range significantly, but also a host of other less notable ones like Voracek who wasn't wanted for free, Benn who's a second liner now being paid top tier cash, Kesler who was injured, Toews now the same. All of those guys were glad they had contracts negotiated pre-30s not after.
Imagine if Phil the Thrill was a UFA at 29. He would have loved to be able to sign a new contract when he was coming off a Conn Smythe worthy post-season and a 92 point campaign, dude would have been a 10M cap hit until he was 37. The team signing it would regret it nearly immediately obviously. But with the contract limits now, probably the best way to maximize value for the typical big name player is peaking at 27 or 28, then signing a full length contract at 28/29 and getting paid for peak value for post-prime years.
Different path to get there but Gaudreau is doing just that. 29 in the off-season, career year, UFA.

This is even more embarrassing.
Guy was your favorite d-man, but then you turn into a troll about him once he gets a little older.
Sure he wasn't Norris calibre anymore, but he's still a very effective d-man.
And if you can't see the difference that having Sutter as coach is making season to season as being the reason the team & Tkachuk are better, and think that it's actually due to Gio leaving then there is no reasoning with you.
The mix of this roster has worked, and exposing Gio in the expansion draft was the right decision, but that doesn't mean the teams struggles the last two seasons prior to this one were his fault.

Shy of a single miracle run (under one Darryl Sutter), Iggy had the same type of success as Gio and you don't hear much question about him around here.

Wait, so Gio was your favorite defenseman up until he broke out and hit a new level? What changed? The All Star invitations? The Norris votes? Almost making team Canada in the 2014 Olympics?
Also, age is the most superficial, low hanging fruit way to judge any player. An older player isn’t automatically going to be trounced by a young hot shot. Figured people’s opinions would’ve changed with Darryl’s “entitlement” approach.
Younger isn’t always better. If you can still play, you should play and that’s essentially Gio. He never checked the speed/size boxes, but he makes it up with his hockey IQ, his instincts, his work ethic, the relentless never quit attitude, you can play a long time in this league with these traits.

I assume if he would accept that, he'd be signed already.
Surely Trev doesn't think he can get him any cheaper than that after the season he has had.
Johnny likely bet on himself and has won the lottery.
I expect Trev likely tried to get him much cheaper after last season, and rightly so. But the cost has gone way up.

I think both management and Johnny's camp agreed to get through this season, see how things go in the playoffs and then maybe talk figures and terms only after its all done.
Clearly JG is a fit for Darryl and this team (which may be the biggest factor in all of it) and obviously if things go well in the post season for Johnny and he sees a successful long-term team forming/formed in Calgary, then its probably a pretty easy agreement.
If things dont go well in the post season for JG and/or the team as a whole, then its pretty likely he moves on, but he certainly has earned that right to decide either way.
Winning solves a LOT of problems when it comes to signing star players.....and GM's to be around to sign said players.

A decision will have to be made but it’s easily Chucky 10/10 times.
Unless you meant a difficult decision to get rid of Mang which I agree.

Now that he has likely outperformed the value of his QO offer, Tkachuk would be playing at a discount next season if he accepted it. More likely he will want to maximize his career year and sign a long term deal.
|
That's not how a QO works. He doesn't have to accept it. The QO is just the minimum offer the team has to make to the player on a one-year contract in order to retain his RFA rights.
If he really wants a one-year contract and Treliving wants something longer, he could file for arbitration and would likely get more than $9 million from the arbitrator.
That's what Bouwmeester did in Florida and got to UFA ASAP.
He could also sign a one-year RFA offer sheet and let the Flames match it, then he could walk next summer after the Flames wouldn't be able to trade him for a year because they matched an offer sheet.
Of course, if it came to that, Treliving would be smart to trade his rights to a team he's willing to sign long-term with this summer and get a solid return.
