Until I looked into it, I didn't realize Jeff Gorton did a lot of the work setting the table for the Bruins eventually rise. Did the Oil hire the wrong guy? Ha Ha.

Quote:
According to the Boston Herald, the Bruins have contacted the New York Rangers for permission to speak with Jeff Gorton regarding the club’s vacant GM position.

Gorton was the Bruins’ assistant GM when the club drafted Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, Milan Lucic and Brad Marchand.

He served as the Bruins’ interim GM for three months in 2006 signing free agents Zdeno Chara and Marc Savard. Gorton was also responsible for the Bruins’ acquisition of goaltender Tuukka Rask from the Toronto Maple Leafs for Andrew Raycroft prior to being replaced by Peter Chiarelli.
Either way it seems like Chiarelli and him did not see eye to eye, so no chance he ends up there.

Quote:
Anything else worth noting? Gorton was let go by the Bruins in the summer of 2007, an interesting decision that wasn’t explained at the time (and that to my knowledge has never been explained). Given that Gorton was a strong candidate for the top job in Boston before it was taken over by Chiarelli, and that he clearly had some support from influential people, it may simply have been a case of Chiarelli wanting to dump a potential rival. Beyond that, it’s worth noting that Gorton has a degree in sports management and created the Bruins’ amateur scouting database.

My personal take: Gorton’s a phenomenal candidate. Most of the best parts of the current Bruins team were put in place either through his efforts at the NHL Draft or his work via NHL free agency, and he’s absolutely a guy I’d have on my short list if I were looking to hire a general manager.

Yeah, nothing against Malkin, I think he's one of the best players in the NHL, but I'd rather see us develop our own guys with our own identity.

im in the classic "depends what it costs" mold. I'd be interested in Malkin for sure. Not at the cost of our big 3 up front or top 2 on the back end though.

Penguins and Blues could seriously shake it up in the off-season. That's really the only team that makes sense for acquiring Malkin asset and compete wise.

remember that our cap space is an asset that may be as valuable as a first round pick to some teams.

Would people not like Malkin's cap?

If the Flames were to pay a lot for a high end player, I would much rather it be a good young defenceman. Wideman and Gio are on the wrong side of 30, and Calgary lacks blue chip defence prospects.

It would be best if they could get someone around 21-24 years old. Someone like Ellis, Vatanen, Larsson, etc. People of the OEL type are probably too expensive.

That would be great if the real genius behind the Bruins success was not Chiarelli, Benning, or Weisbrod. Hope all 3 prove that they just lucked out.

Makes sense, since he left the Bruins they've peaked and now come back to earth, while the Rangers have become a powerhouse.

Hopefully true.

Good to see Pitts (possibly) finally admitting it's time to create some depth and balance that team out.. Sad couple of years there.

Proof, imo, that these oil fans on their knees weeping tears of joy with their fists to the sky have absolutely no clue how long the road ahead of them is

Haha, yes, true enough. I don't suppose Kris Chucko and Greg Nemisz would've gotten the job done.

Rutherford's post season presser. Same old story for the pens.

Pens Inside Scoop @PensInsideScoop
#Pens Rutherford looking to add skilled winger to compliment Crosby/Malkin. Free agent crop not strong. Will look at trades -SK

In regards to Malkin, I think he'd be a great fit on St. Louis.

I wonder if the pens look at Kessel from the leafs. I don't know what they'd give up because they'd need cap space the leafs probably don't want a big contract coming back but if they did Kessel+ for Malkin would work for both sides.

I thought Gorton was pretty much guaranteed to succeed Sather now...Rangers might not let him go easily.

It's funny since Chiarelli was getting credit for both the Chara and Savard signings, but he actually didn't start as GM until two weeks later.

Edit: Actually looks like both were involved. Chiarelli was hired but couldn't start officially until July 15th. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2506775

I feel bad even talking about trading specific players at this point, but if you can get Malkin without giving up any of Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Brodie or Giordano, then I think you have to seriously consider it.

Having said that, including 1st round picks, I don't think a deal gets done without at least one of the aforementioned players being involved. In which case, I wouldn't do it.

Too bad the Flames didn't have Sven anymore. Sven + Hanowski for Malkin could have worked.
