I tend to agree with Raonic's post-match comments where he noted his serve wasn't where it needed to be most of the tournament. But man, Nishikori was outstanding on returns. As it was, Raonic would have won that match in three sets if his serve didn't let him down so much in the second and third sets.

Well, I guess the silver lining is a little bit of extra rest for Milos prior to the Davis Cup tie against Columbia coming up shortly in Halifax.

Huh, I didn't realize that was coming up - I just happen to be in Halifax next week. $65 for the whole event is pretty darn reasonable so I bought an event pass. Should be fun!

Man, that's a great price - I was planning to go to the last Davis Cup tie that was held in Vancouver, but the $300 price for a single seat was a little too steep for my tastes.

I kind of think the opposite, Nishikori would have won in three sets if he didn't break himself 3 times.

If Raonic had Nishikori's backhand he would be unstoppable.

Monfils beats Dimitrov in straight sets which makes me happy. Hard not to like Monfils.

Genie will finish 2014 with the most Grand Slam wins with 19.

So what's a worse loss, losing in five sets to Nishikori or straight sets to Monfils? A lot of pundits point to Dimitrov as the next big thing and while his groundstrokes are better and more consistent than Raonic's, I really question Grigor's mental toughness and his ability to elevate his game when the need arises (and yes, I have heard the same questions about Milos). What I do know is that Dimitrov had a 6-4 lead in the set 2 tiebreaker and let Gael roll off four straight points.

Dimitrov's loss is worse.

Although Monfils might be the most talented player in this era who just doesn't apply himself. I said earlier in the thread he's a clown who plays not even 50% of his potential.

Maybe he's grown up? I would love for him to win the whole thing. He could hit Djokovic and Federer right off the court.

Kudos to Makarova. She's really come out to play against Azarenka, much like she did against Bouchard. She's taking chances and they are paying off. She's very close to advancing.

I thought Nishikori would be just a bump in the road for Stan, but they're currently in the 3rd set tied a 1 set each. Wawrinka is spraying balls all over Flushing Meadows.

Nishikori just blew a chance at a 2-1 set lead by getting broken up 5-2 and now the set is 5-5. Can't see him rallying if he can't pull this set back, it'll take a major effort to do so.

Nishikori wins the third set tie-breaker 9-7. He's gotta be running on fumes, though. If this goes to a 5th and deciding set, Stan should win.

Nishikori has been the better player overall, but Warwinka blew the third set tiebreaker, and he is in danger of screwing up the fourth set breaker as well. From 4-0 to 5-5.

I hope one of TSN3, 4, or 5 re-broadcasts the match tonight (for those of us who couldn't see it live). Nishikori becomes the first player to win his next match after going past 2 am in his preceding match.

Nishikori's reward for 10 sets in 36 hours is Djokovic or Murray. I'm sure that's why he celebrated so little, works his ass off for one of them.
