And a little extra news to add to what I just posted above, the Swiss refused to block access or remove the WikiLeaks.ch domain (their new primary domain after EveryDNS.net -- an American company -- cut them off) because they see no reason it should be.
Switch, their new host, is a non-profit registrar set up by the Swiss government.
Quote:
The site's new Swiss host, Switch, today said there was "no reason" why it should be forced offline, despite demands from France and the US. Switch is a non-profit registrar set up by the Swiss government for all 1.5 million Swiss .ch domain names.
|
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010...ss-host-switch
Funny thing is, EveryDNS.net is still providing DNS servers for WikiLeaks, but with WikiLeaks just using a new top-level domain with Switch.
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...kileaks-domain
Edit: Also, TIME magazine is putting Assange on their cover for December 13th issue along with an article about why WikiLeaks is NOT hurting America.
And Reporters Without Borders condemns the attacks on WikiLeaks:
Quote:
This is the first time we have seen an attempt at the international community level to censor a website dedicated to the principle of transparency. We are shocked to find countries such as France and the United States suddenly bringing their policies on freedom of expression into line with those of China. We point out that in France and the United States, it is up to the courts, not politicians, to decide whether or not a website should be closed.

Interesting to note that another set of documents have been released that list facilities "vital to US security." I would say this new set is fairly inappropriate at this point. I don't know any other details beyond what the article states, but it seems like this might be pushing their luck a bit too far.

Not a shock the Swiss took the site in, anytime they think they can profit from something they'll jump on board. Its a shame wikileaks didnt do a leak on Nazi gold or banking irregularities in that joke of a nation. The more I read about the nature of these leaks, like todays list of sites vital to US security, the more I believe these leaks are bad for our security and national interests.

Well I combine that with the earlier release on anti-IED documents that he released to the world and personal information on soldiers and name releasing informants in Afghanistan, and I think this is far less about some heroic whistle blower and far more about a guy with an axe to grind.

Sidebar wikileaks craziness from the Iranians . . . . . . sending death squads into a disorganized Iraq to find and kill Iraqi pilots from the Iraq/Iran war of the early 1980's.

The Germans were pretty upset about Bomber Harris after WWII . . . . on the other hand, they bombed London first.
In retaliation for the Iranian Operation Karbala-5, an early 1987 attempt to capture Basra, Iraq attacked 65 cities in 226 sorties over 42 days, bombing civilian neighborhoods.
Basically, the Iraqi's were indiscriminately terror bombing Iranian population centres.
Still, considering everything else that went on in that war, Iraqi pilots are an odd thing to key on and go to all that effort.

Could wikileaks become the political version of 4chan? Will we see countries leak info to wikileaks for the express purpose of getting people and countries all riled up at their adversaries, while they sit back and watch the mayhem?
I don't understand why nobody is talking about the possibility of wikileaks being gamed and manipulated. They seem like an easy target, as eager as they are to draw attention to themselves.

Companies are getting pressured to stop supporting wikileaks because of supposed illegal activities and a US senator wants the site listed as a terrorist organization? Come on... This is getting stupid. Seriously, are there laws against hosting whistle blowing material that I'm not aware of?

That's only partially true.
IIRC, a single German bomber got lost and mistook a civilian airfield near London for its intended military target. Churchill, crafty strategist that he was, used this as an excuse to bomb Berlin in retaliation, hoping the move would goad Hitler into ordering the Luftwaffe to expend its resources bombing British cities rather than RAF airfields. Hitler, as we all know, took the bait. This gave the RAF some much-needed "breathing room" and is seen as the turning point of the Battle of Britain.
From wikipedia (consider the source):
Quote:
The Luftwaffe offensive against Britain had included numerous raids on major ports since August, but Hitler had issued a directive London was not to be bombed save on his sole instruction.[170] However, on the afternoon of 15 August, Hauptmann Walter Rubensdörffer leading Erprobungsgruppe 210 mistakenly bombed the Croydon airfield (on the outskirts of London) instead of the intended target, RAF Kenley;[171] this was followed on the night of 23/24 August[142] by the accidental bombing of Harrow, also on the outskirts of London, as well as raids on Aberdeen, Bristol, and South Wales. The focus on attacking airfields had also been accompanied by a sustained bombing campaign which begun on 24 August with the largest raid so far, killing 100 in Portsmouth, and that evening the first night raid on London as described above.[154] On 25 August 1940, 81 bombers of Bomber Command were sent out to raid industrial and commercial targets in Berlin. Cloud prevented accurate identification and the bombs fell across the city, causing some casualties amongst the civilian population as well as damage to residential areas.[172] Continuing RAF raids on Berlin in retaliation led to Hitler withdrawing his directive,[173] and on 3 September Göring planned to bomb London daily, with Kesselring's enthusiastic support, having received reports the average strength of RAF squadrons was down to five or seven fighters out of 12 and their airfields in the area were out of action. Hitler issued a directive on 5 September to attack cities including London.[174][175] In his speech delivered on the 4 September 1940, Hitler threatened to obliterate (ausradieren) British cities if British bombing runs against Germany did not stop.

I'm glad he's being railroaded. Its obvious he has very few scrupples about what is being leaked. He's not the folk hero everyone makes him out to be.

Put in jail and denied bail because Sweden -- which hasn't even pressed any charges against him -- simply wants to ask him some "questions." In other words, keep him there, send him to Sweden, then send him to the US so freedom of speech can be made a further mockery of.
Democracy by dictatorship is right.
Oh well, Julian Assange isn't WikiLeaks, he's just the public face of it.
