Sorry, I wanted to clarify this point:

For every honest whistleblower, there are 100 people who want to use the reporting service for their own benefit, to screw someone else, whatever, but you also have to remember something very important:

Even the honest whistleblowers rarely have any evidence other than a 'hunch' or any form of confirmable information. This is a big reason as to why most of these claims are dismissed out of hand, the reliable reports and information the CRA receives through this method every year number probably in the single digits while the number of calls is likely in the thousands.

Further, most of those calls probably come from the 'nosy neighbours' type of people who again, dont actually know anything, they just suspect.

Tax information is kept private and confidential, so reliable information on transgressions of others held by regular citizens is so rare as to be deemed irrelevant. Not to mention the methods by which that information is likely to have been obtained would make it more dangerous for the holder to reveal than it would be to the person implicated and by extension probably inadmissable in any case.

Years ago, I used to work in an office where a few of us regularly pranked each other. One time I was asked to help with some payback on a co-worker who had phoned another co-worker's house and convinced his wife that they one the home lottery.

I had a female friend leave him a voice mail saying she was from Revenue Canada and that he better get his papers together as he was being audited.

Needless to say that had the desired effect. After a few days of watching him sweat, we let him off the hook, as he was about to hire a tax attorney, but not until I had another friend phone him up and tell him his audit had been moved up to the next day.

He got me back though. I left my email unattended one day and he sent an email to the entire department from my account announcing that I was starting to procede with a sex change and would be dressing as a woman from now on.

I'll do the same for my losses from my tenants kicking apart my fence and punching holes in the walls every week.

Nice exaggeration. All the same, yes, I can be a bit of bulldog....

I'll help you out. I've put a permanent link to this thread on my blog. In fact I will probably personally direct many people to this thread. I'm one of the few in this thread who's real name "is out there". I don't post anything I wouldn't be willing to say or repeat in public. Can you say the same?

And thanks to Locke for a balanced and knowledgeable response.

I knew that the only reason you even participated in this thread was to gain brownie points with your followers.

I think it is a pretty safe bet that most people don't like tax evasion. I also think most people really wouldn't bother reporting a 'possible' case of tax evasion like this, for any number of reasons stated in this thread.

Also, my identity is a click away in my sig.

My point being that you might a complainer rather than a fixer. That you have a low level of flexibility and understanding.

I was pretty tired of all of the election signs as well but I didn't phone 311 3 times in the few weeks that they were out. I knew that it would be over once the election was over.

Did you phone the candidate who owned the signs first?

What are some other reasons that you phoned 311? Did you talk to the people affected first?

I'm pro tax avoidance though.

I've always wondered what percentage a "cash only" business like Peter's Drive In reports. I think the only number you could name that would surprise me would be 100.
