The sad thing is, the offline demographic is probably the strongest one for civic elections.Old people vote. And they vote in large numbers.

I've found younger generations (such as mine - Gen Y) make far too many excuses to vote:

- I'm not informed
- All the candidates sucks
- I'm protesting the vote
- What? No online voting?
- Forget it - Politics bore me

Then they complain that there are a bunch of stooges in power and can't wait for a change. The older generations, IMO, have a larger respect for democracy. Voter apathy will continue to plague Canada on all political levels for years to come.

No candidate has been able to get young people to vote in significant numbers - Nenshi has really the only chance in this election because of this MRC roots but its an uphill battle.

+1 to above for reasons why young people dont vote - also most young please are LAZY. They think that all their problems can be blamed on someone else and such they dont take personal responsibility to change them.

That is a tough nut to crack.

Some experts expect only 30 - 35% of eligible voters to participate in the upcoming election (link).

However, municipal elections offer the citizen the most direct way to become involved in politics.

Certainly this years Mayors race has such a broad spectrum of candidates that no person can truly claim that all candidates suck.

Internet access removes barriers to become informed about candidate's platforms (at least for those candidates who bother to prepare them).

Apathy is still a major problem that will hurt some candidates more than others.

Here is how i have them handicapped:
Higgins: Best name recognition, and currently polling in the lead; however I suspect that she will have the lowest 'follow-through' level of any of the candidates.

McIver: Very good name recognition and strong appeal to voters with similar priorities; his poll respondent's 'follow through' should be better than Barb, but won't be great.

Hehr/Nenshi: Yes they are two separate candidates but have some key similarities - high level of appeal to politically involved/interested voters; low levels of name recognition but highly involved supporters (ie. high level of election day follow through). Will they be able to bridge the gap?

Other Candidates: A diverse bunch, but so far none have shown either broad name recognition or a focused base of support.

It's not that they have more respect for democracy, they just have more time to vote and complain.

Bob Hawksworth was phoning around for votes last night. I still have no interest in seeing anyone from this city council sitting in the mayers chair.

I refuse to reward incompetance.

The poll doesn't ask 'who will be elected mayor?' it's 'who will you vote for?'

Exactly, blame it all on those whippersnappers. All they do is sit around on the cellular phones listening to the rap music. If only they knew of what we sacrificed so that they could have the privilege of a free world.

And don't get me start on how far I had to walk to get to school.

Here's an interesting exchange,

Ric McIver releases his platform, which he calls his "Vision for Calgary."

http://www.ricmciver.ca/wp-content/u...lgary-Card.pdf

Nenshi's response "Thoughts re: Ric's 'Vision'"

^ I agree with almost everything that Nenshi says there. (With the major difference being that I am in favour of "barreling through" the weaselhead and levelling some of Lakeview for the SW Ring Road, but that is another disucssion).

I'm perhaps the last guy who should comment on this, but was McIvers page there drawn up by a jr. high student? Seriously that layout alone is ridiculous!

Nah, I'm sure the design was contracted out to the lowest (LOCAL!!!!) bidder to get the highest value for taxpayers' Ric McIver for Mayor Campaign's hard-earned suburban-developer-and-PGIB-donated dollars.

I thought his campaign office looked really nice...but then the other night I saw one of the Chinook Centre Security Cars and I think that the design is almost the exact same?

Jon Lord seems to think YYC doesn't need the parallel runway because the A380 isn't selling as well as thought (according to him).

That man is a complete idiot.

Its not if you go by Airbus estimates circa 2005, but the A380 isnt why they need the runway.

True, but Lord probably read that the new airport master plan utilizes the "footprint" of the A380 (the last master plan used the 747-400) and assumed that is why we need the parallel runway.

His statement is so out of whack that it shows he really is out to lunch.

I think that's code for "Will take bribes".

Yeah, her "platform" isn't exactly earth-shattering.

I've met mud-puddles that were less shallow, and what content there is sounds suspiciously like "stay the course and slow down on new infrastructure."
