Bama tops the USA Today preseason coaches' poll. Ohio State, Florida, Texas and Boise State round out the top five. Virginia Tech was sixth, followed by TCU, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa to round out the top 10.http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5442120
BYU going independant in football...two other MWC schools may be headed to the WAC. Will be interesting to see what Boise State does now as they might want to head back to the WAC. This could be the end of the MWC and their crappy TV deal.
Looks like a fight to the death between the Wac and mwc
Now Fresno st and Nevada indicating they will jump to the mwc
BYU was going to stick the non football sports in the wac but the
Wac might have trouble surviving.

What does BYU think they're going to gain by becoming an independent?
they can schedule whoever they want and will have a TV deal in place that they wont have to share with other teams is my guess.
Scheduling will be a nightmare for them though as they don't provide opponents with the exposure or the pay day that Notre Dame does. There's also less quality opponents who will want to play them with the pac-10 and big-10 both expanding to 12 teams with 9 conference games.
I've also heard rumours that they're pushing for an automatic BCS bid ala Notre Dame. This would be absolutely stupid and if it goes through SMU might as well go independent and become "Notre Dame South"
BYU best chance at becoming a top tier program would be to stay in the MWC and hope that they along with TCU and the newly acquired Boise State continue to rip it up.

You're underestimating the Mormon support BYU gets. It is THE SCHOOL for them. Going independent isn't the best idea for them, and I doubt they get an automatic BCS birth, but they will do just fine. They already have their own TV channel, and I doubt their scheduling changes much from the WAC / MWC opponents they already face.
If anything this is the death knell of the MWC. Boise must be pissed. I don't see the 16 team four conference supergroup far off now. It will happen sooner than later it seems.

Well Fresno St. and Nevada are now joining the MWC which might make BYU's decision tougher.
BYU and Texas just agreed to a home and home series for 2013 and 2014. Looks like BYU is trying to line-up some big time competition in preparation for turning independent.
Like was mentioned above, I think BYU sees the writing on the wall regarding the "superconferences" and think if they aren't going to get an invite they have to make a power move now and leave the MWC to establish themselves as their own brand.
Darron Thomas was selected as the starting quarterback for the Ducks this afternoon. Should be interesting to see what a QB who's actually a decent passer can do in Oregon's offence.
Me thinks USC is only going to win 4 or 5 games this season.
ESPN the Magazine had an article where they mentioned that teams facing the sanctions that USC did lost, on average, half a game more a year in the year after the sanctions.
That being said, the article says nothing of changing from Pete Carroll to Lane Kiffin, who, in the same article, was ranked as the coach players would least like to play for.

A.J. Green a top prospect for 2011 is not playing this afternoon against Louisiana-Lafayette because of an NCAA investigation over alleged improper contact between agents and players on several teams. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5530981
