I used to work at Extra Foods so I have a TON of complaints about morons who use the self-checkout. I can tell you right now that on a busy day, operating the self-checkout is harder than an actual til, cause you're actually in control of like 6 different machines at the same time. Things are beeping at you, people are yelling at you to fix their mistake and get pissed when you're helping someone else. Sometimes the cards don't go through correctly so you have to have the person come up to the counter to sign for their groceries. Blah.
What pisses me off is when people take their groceries off the bag scale. Like, they're there for a reason. To weigh your groceries and make sure you don't add anything that you didn't actually scan for. JUST LEAVE YOUR BAGS ON THERE, JESUS.
You would think that the little pictures on the screen would help customers figure out which produce is theirs but it's a lot harder than just ~picking celery~ cause there's two different kinds and people always chose the wrong one. Haha.
I had this lady get pissed off at me cause she was trying to enter banana's. At this point I didn't care, I was SO frustrated at the idiocy of people I told her it wasn't my problem and went on break. I got in trouble of course but whatever. THERE'S STICKERS FOR A REASON. Do they think the #4011 is decoration???
That being said, I prefer self-checkouts more than the tils, but only because I know how to work them like a pro. It takes me like less than five minutes to scan my stuff and get out of the store. So simple it makes me want to cry.
But working them is no fun when you've got six people who have not a clue what to do with themselves.
edit: lmao that was longer than I wanted it to be. Oh well.

Oh I can't remember what store it was that used price stickers. It was quite awhile back. But seriously, because of a small discrepancy between two prices, people think they're entitled to the item for free? Come on. The cheaper price, definitely. Free? Gimme a break.

Think of it was a reward for informing the store that their price displayed is incorrect so that the store can stop overcharging future customers.

The point of computerized systems is to reduce errors.
Besides, SCOP is voluntary.

I think you are completely missing the point. The number of pricing errors today is considerably lower than 10 years ago. Why? Because prior to that code of practice, there was no incentive for a store to make sure the prices were right. If somebody called them on it they would save the 10% of the price or whatever. So even if I saw something come up as the wrong price, I wouldn't call the store on it because it wasn't worth the hassle of a price check for me to save 40¢ on a $4 item.
Now stores have to be extra careful so they aren't giving away free stuff all the time. It wouldn't surprise me to see that the stock people have incentives in place to make sure the prices are correct.

It's part of the service policy. 2 bags or more they ask you if you need a hand out. Period.

Even with the code of pratice price errors are still happening a lot. Imagine one or two people sitting behind a computer feeding in all the price changes into a computer every week. That was a weekly occurance at Safeway. With all the changes things still get missed. Sometimes head office doesn't give those people all the price changes needed to be done. Other times it's too many price changes and staff rushed for time to get it all done.

The only place the self-checkout seems to be working is at Sobey's (might just be the one near me though).
They have it marked as express only. Most people seem to stick to real cashiers, allowing the self-checkouts to work beautifully.
I made the mistake of going in the self-checkout line at Superstore last week. I was 3rd in line and it took me like 15 minutes. I wanted to punch the old man who took 10 minutes to bag his eggs and the dumb chinese lady that had a massive cart full of weird produce.

I loved the self check outs for produce. Oh...these $3 a pound red peppers....I can't see, I think they're the green peppers that are $1.09 a pound, what type of apples did I buy again, they look like the $1.59 Royal Gala's but I think they were the 49 cent Spartans. This isn't Romaine Lettuce, no this is ice berg. Whenever I want a deal on produce, I'm hitting up the self checkout.

That's hilarious!
How do they prevent this? How do they prevent people from scanning one item and putting two in the bag?
I've never done either of these things because I don't want to get caught stealing for a $1 worth of apples, but some people have to abuse this. With one girl watching over 6 people what is stopping anyone from doing either of those things?

Seriously???
You think the cashiers get a cut out of increasing the cost of your tomatos?
What possible benefit could a cashier get out of that?

I don't get the point of having four self checkouts. And having only one be in service on boxing day.
Really? Why even put the costs into setting them up?
