The Sony motion system looks very solid. The bow and arrow tech demo was really cool.

Both Microsoft's and Sony's motion controls are clearly prototypes that are years away from the market. By the time they're released Nintendo will have something beyond the MotionPlus ready to go.
Microsoft's is probably the worst system as it takes tons of genres out of the mix right away and is focused around the casual gamer (except having a huge pricetag compared to the Wii).

only really new thing was how they were making the tracks, as they were actually sort of driving the track and not laying blocks down arbitrarily.

For me Sony has the best games. Really disappointed though that they didnt announce a price cut for the PS3. Also no hint of a slim PS3 that was leaked earlier.

I have to go look at Microsoft's motion thing as I have yet to do that. As you could tell from my earlier posts I was dead set against Sony using a motion controller, but even I have to admit the tech demo was pretty cool. I would be curious to know how far out both things are though (did microsoft announce a date?) edit: sony says spring 2010 (i'll believe when i see). I'm cool with it as long as it remains a peripheral that exists on the fringe aimed at more of a casual audience. My big issue with motion control from sony was that it could be made at the expense of other things that I feel they should be focusing on.
Okay I just looked at the Project Natal video. Looks very cool, but I just don't understand how it could work that well. Wouldn't it pick up on all sorts of benign movements? I hope like hell it works well, but I have the feeling it would have the same problem as the wii - it would get your imagination going but once you tried it, it would feel off.

I have to agree with you there, I have a hard time seeing Natal being used for for much else other than crazy party games. I certainly can't see how it could be utilized to bring us a new perspective on how we interact with the worlds of our favorite genres.
I think that there will be a few games based on interaction much like the Milo project, some crazy party games and not much else.
The main problem that I can is movement. It is almost impossible for the user to change their environment without some alternative input (A travel button, analog joysticks, "Go North" type command) which means that most games can only partially use Natal or has to have some kind of wacky gestures or touchable menu items to advance the player. Using a menu based input will be distracting, which is bad UI design, and gestures will just make people have to memorize a whole bunch of movements, which invalidates the whole "no controller" thing.
Hopefully I am wrong and someone much smarter than I am can think of a way to make this work. At least it has potential as a good tool for Japanese dating simulations, which opens up a whole new can of wrong.

Natal isn't going to live up to it's potential unless the porn industry gets behind it.

Might be corny and over the top, but I really want to try Rogue Warrior. I was big fan of the books when I was in university

lol, good point. I noticed Sony made a point to talk about how necessary a button is. Have to wonder if that's a reaction to MS's presser the day earlier. You make a good point though, without a button you would have to do something gesture wise. Perhaps use of the X button will now be mapped to a thrusting crotch. I could get behind that. Wait ... that sounds gay. Get in front of that? Oh god, why don't I just delete this!?

Microsoft has it right with Natal. No need for a special controller. I am guessing you will see games that intergrate the use of both the Natal and the controller or 1000 other different props.

But they said that the thing that was holding us back was the need for a controller or props to interact. If you need a controller as well as Natal to play your game then Natal is just a gimmick.
And let me say that I'm not against Natal as a gimmick either. I think it would be pretty cool to be playing an RPG, such as Mass Effect, and be able to actually act out the conversations since they were such an integral part of the game. It just seems like people will be wasting a lot of potential if they only settle for gimmicks.

Fight is recorded by the all-seeing eye of Natal and automatically uploaded to YouTube.
Wait...there's a potential for profit somewhere here.
