I know about the 1 year, and his salary is 14 mil cause its the average of the top 5 qb salary.
Here is Mike Lombardi updated article on Cassell this morning. Doesnt mention anything about 2 years - maybe I misread it.

Unless something drastic changes, this is the last season under a cap for the NFL.
The players say if a cap goes, they will never agree to one again (carrying on the mantra Gene Upshaw started).
Stupid owners, they appear to be the ones killing the golden goose.

NHL players said the same thing. Then low and behold they accept and it actually works to their benefit.

I agree, I think it works for both sides.
But the owners want a bigger cut, and apparently some of the owners *cough*Jerry Jones*cough* have already structured some contracts for an uncapped year.
Plus, some of the owners want the revenue sharing scheme altered so they can keep some more money off of their their properties *cough*Jerry Jones*cough*, while smaller revenue teams are fighting to keep things as they are.
The argument I heard last year while this battle was rumoured spoke of how Jerry Jones was upset that the Cowboys was a goldmine of licensing, and he was coming up with new ways to earn even more, but he hated that a portion was skimmed off the top by the NFL and would go to support teams like the Cardinals (who were not SB sweethearts at the time) who had owners like the Bidwells that did very little to expand their NFL property and had profited off the efforts of the other owners for a very, very long time.

Lombardi is definitely not the Eklund of the NFL.
I am not sure why he says 2 years, or why he would have got it wrong if it is wrong, but he is a legitimate NFL insider with a lot of history and contacts in the league.
The only thing I can think of that is wrong with him is that he is supposedly buddies with Belicheat.

2 3rd round picks doesnt seem like a huge amount to give up for someone who might turn into a descent qb. And if he does a 3rd and a 1st doesnt seem like much at all.
Also, look for him to be traded before the trade deadline as he is most valuable then. The KC rumors are just that. Supposedly they have a guy already in there system that those in the organization think is worth building a team around that. Rumor is Pioli isnt convinced of that yet.
Also, heard a crazy rumor, thought it was just a NE homer spouting, but I have heard it from a few different places so not sure what to make of it. Here it is (it involves my fav team, Broncos so I am not sure how I like it).
1: Denver would trade Cutler for picks and a good defensive player.
2: Denver would then trade for Cassell there by reuniting McDaniels and Cassell.
Trade would basically work out to Cutler for Cassell and top 3 round pick and young defensive player.
As a Broncos fan, I have never been sold on Cutler. I watched a few Patriots games and I dont know if it was Matt or if it was the recievers and line or if it was a combination of both. When he throws for a few 400+yd games I dont think you can say that is only the system but who knows.
|
That's a silly rumor that is a product of people trying to connect dots. First of all, Cutler is twice the QB Cassell will ever be and he's not done improving. Trust me, McDaniel is THRILLED to have him. Secondly, he's worth more than 'picks and a good defensive player'.
Thank goodness it will never happen and you may not be sold, but just about every QB guru that gets a minute of airtime is.

Jacksonville releases Fred Taylor in a cap move. They might try to bring him back, but he still feels he has something to offer as a starter. He's had a pretty nice career so far, but Running backs over 30 have seen their best days 100 times out of 100.

The off season police blotter can continue.
Marshawn Lynch charged with weapons offenses in So-Cal.

Saints release Deuce McAllister.
Sad but expected. His knees are junk, he was due to make $7.3 million this year, and the Saints were $5 million over the cap going into this off-season. Still, he's my all-time favourite Saint. We'll miss ya Deuce!

No question, Deuce was a great player for NO when healthy. He did a ton of things for the community, and handled his lack of playing time last season with class. I'll miss the chants at the dome.
But, business is business, he had to go. I still hope they can find a big back for short yardage situations, or at least develop a play better than "Off tackle right."

It will be interesting to see Bush carry most of the load. I know he did already this season but it will defiantly be something to watch.

What is the status of Pierre Thomas? I'm assuming he is under contract for next season?

Yep Thomas will be there next year, it'll be him and Reggie sharing the load. Like Moe said, I'd like to see a big back come in and spell them sometimes, especially in short yardage situations.

I'll be keeping Thomas in my fantasy league. Bush seems to be dinged up a fair bit.

What do the Saints fans think of the Chiefs hiring Gary Gibbs? Although he has been given no official title as of yet. Speculation is that he will be the new defensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs.

His name is like a bad word on Saints message boards. Of course, this season we'll see if it was the lack of talent or if it was a poor scheme that caused the Saints to have a below average defense.
