I don't think unions deserve to be placed above all else. I think the best way to make sure unions are always relevant is to have workers choose to pay from their own pockets. At the very least they should face annual certification or something.

Right now, once in tax payers and consumers have to fund them, they pretty much can't be fired, workers can't choose to participate or not or sometimes even disagree - forever. It makes no sense in this day and age.
It is tough to say employees can individually choose whether to be in a union because then you have the "Free rider effect" People will choose not to be part of the union but then expect the same wage, even though they aren't part of the collective.

Employees do have the right to de-certify their union, but I don't know the procedures. I'm sure it isn't easy, and perhaps it should, as you suggest require a regular certification. But then, even if the union is "dissolved" I would think you may want an additional few years of votes just to ensure an employer doesn't try to take advantage of the situation.

But just as there are bad employees who take advantage of union privilege, there are bad employers who can take advantage of the lack of a union, and generally I think the employee is more vulnerable than the employer.

The vulnerable employee is free to move on to another job where he/she thinks they are treated fairly and paid accordingly. Management in a union enviroment is faced with a lot documentation and grievences to get rid of the dead weight. During the years i spent with Safeway all of my managers complained bitterly about how long and difficult the process was. Most just decided it wasn't worth the effort as the union always argued for a suspension as opposed to a termination.

As a former Union Stewart (20 years ago) I have mixed feelings. on one hand unions stopped slave wages, unfair layoffs..etc (years ago) but they also brought out the worst in employee-employer relations. I always said an internal union/association would be the best for both sides, let the employees weed out the lazys and trouble makers, companys would get what they pay for and both sides would be happy.
