I actually don't like my name all that much. It's not a very macho name and in fact, the feminine version is a lot more common. All throughout school, I had to deal with people calling me by the feminine version. Teachers would often look at the names on the list on the 1st day of class and because my name closely resembles a girl name, they'd call out the feminine version on the 1st day... which would pretty much ruin the rest of the year.
I'll give you a clue... if I played for the Flames, I'd be gritty.

Yup. Still happens, although as an adult, it is not that bad... but the kids would have a hay day with it. On the 1st day of class, or when we had a sub, it was always painstaking hearing the attendance being called and wondering if it would happen.

These new-aged names are bullshart. I heard some pretentious flake calling for her little Tevin... or was it Teven, or Tevan, or Teh-vhan in Walmart. I don't know why that pissed me off, it's such a stupid little thing that shouldn't impact my life at all but it triggers some anger gland in the center of my brain.

If your kid is a boy you should name him Braydon as a tribute to CP.

As I see it, it's not that parents want their child to be unique that is a problem, it is the assumption that giving your child a unique name will somehow assist in this transformation. It's like the pernicous influence of marketing has filtered into minds of parents everywhere, "Well, as just plain ol' FRANK my kid would be a failure, but if he's branded as PHRANKKY he's gonna be a hip-hop star in 2030 FOR SURE!!!"

Probably related the the story I heard in Louisiana about the twin children named Lemonjello and Orangello.
Not saying there isn't really a Lemonjello running around somewhere, but it is a bit of an urban legend making fun of Southerners/African Americans:

I have a similar problem, but obviously not as bad since it is my last name.
They can say Justin perfectly fine (my boss says "Just In Time" a lot, but I find it funny), but Eder is too difficult? The stupid thing is that during my grad (a few months ago) you have to spell your name phonetically (how it sounds), so I spell E-e-der. I ask the woman if that is fine, she says put another 'e', I say ok. I write Justin E-e-e-d-e-r. So an hour and a bit later when they actually call my name, for my grad where I get my diploma, etc. "Justin EDer.....ooohh I mean Justin E-e-e-d-e-r."
Rarely when people say my name they say it properly. Now my last name is weird because some of my uncles in my family pronounce it different than my family does.
The thing that really pisses me off though is when a telemarketer calls and will ask for a Justin Elder...WTF?? Where the hell is the L in my name? Same with our dumb mail main. I have package waiting for a Justin Elder...and they write it on the piece of paper with an l...can they not read the package and see it has no L? Just because my name is not "American" like Thompson, does not mean it isn't spelled correctly. My name is Austro-German. I am proud to be German, and in honor of my dad I am giving my son his middle name...Gunther. I am going to Europe for 3 months, so I should find some cool Euro names.

One suggestion i would give is that before naming your first child you should hang out at a few busy playgrounds to get a feel for what the common names.
My first-born is a boy we named Hayden, a name we still like, but after hearing all the other aidens, jaydens, and the like, we may have reconsidered.
My girls are named Evie and Fynlee, but my family has a habit of unusual girls names (my sisters are Danusia (age 43) and Roshanne (age 30)), even though we are as 'non-ethnic' as can be imagined.

My daughter is one of only 2 girls named Julina since 2000 in Alberta. Does that make it a weird name that she'll never be able to cope with?
I just picked it because my mom's name is Julie, and I liked the sound of Julina.

I wasn't aware these were strange names either. I know quite a few people named Brayden and Jayden, I'm 21 years old (not sure if that makes a difference).
