If you look at the 2020 draft when Adams took over, and look at the players the Sabres had in their organization that were U-26 years old:

Forward: Reinhart, Eichel, Thompson, Mittelstadt, Skinner, Cozens, Quinn, Peterka, Rodrigues, Girgensons, Olofsson

Defense: Dahlin, Ristolainen, Montour, McCabe, Colin Miller, Borgen, Samuelsson, Jokiharju

Goalie: Ullmark, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen

Should have been able to build a pretty good team with all those pieces.
yeah I'm not saying that's a cup winning group (they are a bit thin in some places ) but no playoffs in the 5 years since (and for years prior) is pretty telling

Terry Pegula is also a lifelong hockey and Sabres fan. Like a lot of fans, he probably thinks he knows a lot more than he does, and wants more control.

And while they’re more frugal now, they splashed out big money on the Sabres on and off the ice in the early years of owning the team.

It’s starting to show in the Bills as well.

Dobson wanted $11M per which Buffalo didn’t want to do.

Haven't followed this closely, but I'm assuming Peterka's willingness to sign with and at a term with the other suitors was contingent on their offers and influence which way Buffalo had to go?

It does sound now like the fumbled the bag a little. Even if they didn’t care for Rossi, Kyrou, or Dobson, for whatever their reasons, they could’ve flipped them too. I guess they really did like those guys. Still should’ve negotiated a second round pick or something.

I’m surprised they wouldn’t have taken Kyrou

This is probably part of it from Buffalo's perspective.

They ship out Peterka who is now making $7.75 million and add 2 players making $2.4 million collectively, at least for next season. They cheaped out and if I was a Sabres fan, I'd be super pissed.

If you're going to cheap out, at least go for futures. I guess it depends on what the Sabres do now, but they are not a better team after this trade and likely worse IMO.

At some point you gotta trust your scouts. If they liked the players so be it.

They easily could value that a lot more than a late first.

As talented as Kyrou is, his GAS meter is frequently broken, hence why he's often in trade rumors. The Blues probably don't see him as part of the team long term.

If you have culture issues already in Buffalo, you certainly don't want another guy adding to that problem.

I assume Kyrou's NTC doesn't kick in until July 1?
