I think that's the difference.

I don't even think it was about patience to let him heal. He only had a year left on his deal and at that point, and he couldn't play like a $6 million dollar player. Montreal didn't have more patience, they just had more cap space. What they did on his next contract is kind of irrelevant.

Flames traded Monahan for one reason only. They were jonesing for Kadri and had no cap space.

Treliving knew he was on his way out. He was desperate. He didn’t give a #### about the Flames future. It was his last shot.

One of the worst moves

I also think if it was straight up for a 1st round pick this year it wouldn’t be the end of the world. What makes it so bad is the unnecessarily convoluted mess of conditions. Feels like treliving just agreed to the demands of any team that picked up the phone and didn’t push back at all. I just find it hard to believe no one else would’ve said “fine” to a deal with the lower of our first round picks this year

There may not have been any other teams.

Remember he had a modified NTC, so it had to be a team on his list with available cap space.

It was likely, generally, contending teams, who likely had little cap space. There was not a number of teams to choose from. And what contending team wanted Monny all season? Healthy enough to give it a go, but not healthy enough to be any good.

The convoluted conditions actually benefited Calgary, as their pick was lottery protected.

Not at all. He had just pulled off what most CP posters felt was the heist of the century. But he knew he "was on his way out"? Even after the poor season, the large market and sought after Toronto immediately gave him a long term contract. That does not spell "run out of town".

What could have been......
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Zary - Monahan - Coronato
Mangiapane - Bennett - Pospisil
Pelletier - Backlund - Klapka

Fox - Anderson
Hanifin - Dobson
Kylington - Tanev

But Lindholm is not here because Fox stays? I know hypothetical...

I hate being that hypothetical guy, the flames have made me that way. 2004 is obviously the first year we talk about, but 2006... had we just one more scorer, i think we go all the way, i mean if the oilers went to game 7 of the finals...

But there is a salary cap. Gaudreau/Tkachuk/Fox would be making extra large money and Andersson/Hanifin/Lindholm/Monahan/Tanev/Backlund/Bennett would be making some serious money as well.

We can’t rewrite the past in this regard. But one of the few bright spots of the present, is that Monahan is doing well after an incredibly difficult time, professionally and even more so, personally.

I wish him nothing but continued success and am happy for each point he gets.

This is going to sound weird, but I hope Sean Monahan scores against the Flames with the Gaudreaus in house.

I hope Monahan can hit 80 points this year. He's one guy who I'll cheer for, no matter what team he ends up with (other than Edmonton).

13-3 flames with a Monahan hattrick seems fitting.

That crossbar in game 6 still haunts me.

Just want to add Shayne Gostisbehere as downtrodden player having a career resurgence. Flyers had to attach a 2nd and 7th to give him away to Arizona.

Vigneault hated him and ruined his game and reputation. 31 other GMs thought he was trash and not worth picking up. Very happy to see him do well with Carolina.
