Scott Wheeler is reporting that Val-d'Or may be trading Gridin to Rimouski

Could he have stayed in the USHL, or transferred to another Junior A league like the BCHL?

Maybe more so if he becomes a legit top prospect in North America by then. Until things change in Calgary (new arena, successful team, etc) and the team becomes a team kids want to join, I'd like for the Flames to mitigate the risk of draft picks leaving as best as they can.

Could he not just wait two years and go back in the NHL draft under the CHL route? If he really doesn’t want to come here he won’t. Thankfully that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Yeah, but the NCAA route would let him pick where he wants to go.

This is a no brainer for me if I put myself in his shoes.

Honestly, IMO, risks aside, Michigan would have been better for his development.

What does academic reasons imply? That he didn't have the grades for Michigan?

Yes. That his grades were too low for the admission office.

Also not to mention he can earn a bunch of scholarships in the CHL and have a decent crack at a good education once his career is done.

He also gets to play with reigning QMJHL MVP Mathieu Cataford in Rimouski

He's going to make money in his hockey career (either a lot here or a decent amount in the KHL... or both). The scholarship money is almost trivial... this isn't going to be a means of getting educational allowances for him... it's purely vocational training.

The risk with drafting a non-USA college player is minimal.
Most of the times, the main priority of these Russian players is to play in the NHL as soon as possible. It's not to stick around in the NCAA. For them, they really don't have some loyalty to a particular city that they haven't likely even visited yet. It's simply to make something out of their lives similar to other immigrants wherever it is.

He technically could also go right to the AHL if he or the organization wanted him to.

How bad do one's grades need to be to not get into Michigan on an athletic scholarship?
Interesting barbell approach between the academic inclination of the flame's two first round picks

At least he's staying in NA but a bit too bad to hear that's not a great league particularly for learning the defensive side of the game, for me its by far the weakest CHL league. Basically he goes there for a year and puts up massive numbers or he gets devalued as a prospect, I don't see any way he actually raises his stock there. Better than going back to Russia though.

So just a bit above passing grades - C+ average.
