I think it's always been a thing (obviously). I think what's new is that the students talk about it now. In the instance I described, it was kept pretty mum. Plus, it was a pretty backwoods type of place (on the prairies lol) where most people are related to each other and you just keep schtum about this stuff. Hell, the deputy mayor's response was "horny is horny" complete with a shrug. Plus, it was the 80s/90s, and the whole "dude is banging the teacher, whoop whoop, what a conquest" line of thinking was much more prevalent, which appears to have even been the line of thinking for the jury that acquitted the teacher in this case, of sexual exploitation with a minor. I suspect it might be a different story now but who knows.

Again, in Ireland, we suspected one of our classmates was banging the substitute teacher.

A few year later, they were married.

I found out they were divorced or probably separated at the time when she started hitting on me at the class reunion.

The only other thing that was a thing at my former high school was that one of our teachers went into national politics a few years after I graduated.

My kids' schools, their biggest thing that happened, didn't happen at their schools, but to kids they went to school with. One was the overdose death of a 15 yo kid that my youngest went to school with & knew peripherally, because he was a super nice kid that managed to be friends with everyone - that happened right next to the school at the skate park/youth centre - him and another guy were sold some poison laced ecstasy. The older guy survived, the 15 yo died, as mentioned.

My eldest went to school with Kristian Ayoungman, and also with the 2 brothers accused of murdering him. Another case where all involved were well known in the school, for different reasons. The kid that overdosed that I mentioned above, played football at the junior level and my son played on the senior team, so he sort of knew who he was from that.

That's all the stuff that was "big" that happened at their schools, that they can remember.
