The forwards, who were available, were younger and had higher draft year NHLes than Honzek, were Barlow, Musty, Perreault and Cristall. I preferred all of them at the time, so I felt disappointed by the Honzek pick.
However, Honzek’s draft year numbers were solid, and picking him was not a reach.
Certainly, the D+1 regression to less than a point per game in the WHL, feels concerning to me. That’s for sure.
However, I think Flames’ fans need to be patient with Honzek. Let’s see what happens when he’s an AHLer next year, full time with the Flames’ development staff.

And its a survey of 10 scouts, so not the end all and be all of information.

Honzek was also well ahead of Perrault on SN’s final ranking.

I do remember at the draft they mentioned Conroy really wanted Honzek. Can't remember who said it though.

Literally every team who drafts a player says this. What else would be said?

What is evident - THE ONLY thing that is evident, actually - is that they went for who they felt was the best player available.
His PPG was right up there with the most elite talent in the draft. I think you are focusing on size here rather than what he was able to accomplish last season with his skill.

I think I'd like to see Honzek move straight into the AHL next season. He's eligible.

I think some here underestimate how long it takes to recover/fully heal from some injuries.
Just look at Coleman, he finally had a chance to take care of some things that were bugging him from Tampa's cup runs, and he's a completely different player out there. He turned into a 70P player from a 40P player. Monahan is another example.
I'm firmly in the wait and see camp.

Yeah, especially with an Achilles being cut. He was off his feet for 6 months, then got injured at the Flames camp. He essentially missed a full year of development. The Flames did select a player knowing he had an Achilles injury, so you can criticize them on taking that risk, but for sure they didn't count on him getting another injury so soon.
I think it will be 3 years at least until we know how this pick turns out.

No, the panel said Conroy was in love with him in particular. Hence the "can't remember who". You'd think I'd remember if it was the Flames.

Oh, well, if somebody on a panel said it, and you can't even remember who that was, that's ironclad proof right there.

It's being used as ‘proof’ that the Flames have tunnel vision and stupidly drafted the wrong player.
That doesn't deserve a polite answer.

Didn't say proof. It's just something that happened. You're welcome by the way. Jesus, I was defending the pick earlier, maybe read the thread.

I did read the thread. There are a lot of posts by a lot of posters. I mistakenly thought you were speaking up in support of another poster who said something that was, frankly, quite stupid. Please accept my apology.

How Is Blake Coleman, with a career high 51 points at the age of 32, a 70 point player?

I agree. The Flames’ development staff seems like a strength. They need to be closer and more hands-on with Honzek. Honzek has size, skating and hands.
