Ps. The top 10 players in scoring all had over 100 points each. It was most definitely not "in the heart of the trap era."
|
Did he have 163 penalty minutes and scare the absolute #### out of opponents?
christ sake, I never said highest scoring season
He was in his early 20s at the time, guy would have been absolutely dominant and maybe the greatest ever without those injuries.
did you watch him play in those days? or are you just going by hockey DB
Iggy never scored 100 points but he was a hell of a lot better than many players who have
Maybe I got the era wrong I was thinking Devils cup but still
Imagine a 22 year old MASSIVE center putting up 116 points in 73 games with 163 penalty minutes in this era, he would be the face of the league...McDavid who?

Lindros wasn't just a player, he was a FORCE. One of my favorites of all time. Not only was he an elite offensive player, but he was also an intimidating presence, a devasting hitter, and could beat the hell out of the best enforcers of the day. Shame that the concussions derailed his career, but he's still 21st all-time in pts/gp.

All true, great player but he was also a massive tool (on and off the ice), so hated he's probably the only player that had multiple team "bounty's" on his head to hurt him and hurt him bad. He was feared but not respected.
Stevens got a lot of nods from people after that hit.

You know Lindros played more games than Forsberg did, right? Everyone always talks about how Lindros was robbed of having some magical career, but they don't realize Forsberg had even worse injury troubles than he did.
Lindros: 865pts in 760 games.
Forsberg: 885pts in 708 games.
When Forsberg retired because of injuries, he was 4th all-time in assists per game and 8th in points per game. So, he played less games than Lindros but still finished "up there with Wayne and Mario" (per game).

Peak Lindros was better then peak Forsberg. But both are 2 of the greatest from the 90's.

Like a lot of hockey fans, my introduction to Lindros was the 91 Canada Cup. The Canada/World Cup gets sneered at today, but back then it was the most prestigious best-on-best tournament in the hockey world. The 87 Canada Cup was fresh in fans’ minds as one of the best hockey tournaments in history. People were absolutely pumped in anticipation of the 91 tournament.
So it was shocking when Lindros - who was still in junior and hadn’t played a game in the NHL - was picked for the team. Especially when you consider Steve Yzerman didn’t make the cut. The hype around Lindros was unprecedented, so a lot of fans were skeptical. This guy had never played against adults, and he was jumping straight into a tournament of the world’s best players.
Then we saw him on the ice. Not only was he one of the biggest players in the tournament, he could skate and keep up with the best players in the world. And he hit. In each of his first two games, he hit opponents so hard he knocked them out of the tournament. I remember me and my buddies cheering and laughing as he nailed a Swedish player into the boards with a clean hit and left him crumpled on the ice. IIRC, it was his second shift of the tournament. He was 18.
Lindros finished the tournament with 3 goals and 5 points in 8 games playing on the fourth line. After that, nobody doubted the hype anymore.
Edit: For all that, I still think Forsberg was the better all-around player.

If that hit occurred today, he would be suspended in my opinion
Kariya hit alone should be 20+ games.
Stevens took out several players. ( Paul Kariya, Lindros, etc)
All of the hits were head shots.
Not the point of the thread

If your point about Lindros is "there's more to hockey than points" then stop using points-per-game as an argument for why he was one of the greatest of all time. Or at the very least don't be surprised when people poke holes in your argument with statistics.

And yet Wayne didn't pick Wayne or Mario...

Did Philly just reacquire Lindros? What's going on?

No one every accused Gretzky of being smart. In four years, he never made the playoffs in four seasons as a coach. He hasn't proven anything about knowing how to build a team. Scoring goals is a completely different skill set.

The whole idea of a draft is ridiculous. No eighteen year old should be forced to play for the team that drafted him. Outside of North America and Australia, I can't think of any countries that participate in this type of forced labour.
If a kid who wants to work at McDonalds downtown gets drafted at a franchise in Airdrie, he's supposed to move up there without complaint and just take it? And save me the whole argument about millionaires getting paid to play a game for children. The vast, vast majority of players drafted won't make it at the NHL level, yet they're legally bound to play for the team that drafted them, and their minor league affiliates.

Why should anyone be forced to move cities, and in most cases countries, to work for an employer that they didn't choose?

Well for one, they aren’t forced to do anything. Two, having one team have the right to sign you is a condition of playing in the NHL… which they do choose to do.
Nobody is forced to play in the NHL if they don’t want to. They can play hockey for money wherever.

If they want to play in the world's top league, they're forced to play for the team that owns their rights, and their earnings are capped.
In any other industry this would be an open and shut case for anti-trust. Individuals, regardless of age or race, should be permitted to seek employment in the field of their choice with any employer, and should be allowed to negotiate compensation without arbitrary caps that they had no input on setting.

Points Points Points Points Points
Forsberg has slightly more points...okay
Lindros was an absolute beast, he could have had zero points and impacted the game big time
