Any progress on the popup at the bottom of the page? It reloads every page turn and block enough of the screen to be annoying. The side popups were not annoying at all, to me at least. Again, in on a subscription model. My price would be about $20 per month.

If I may, a couple recommendations if you do switch the site over to another platform:
-The ability to post a photo to your post without having to host it elsewhere
-Ignore functions that work when the ignored poster is quoted
This would be so good!

Hosting a photo on the site uses the site's bandwidth.. Traditionally that was expensive (though the current VPS hosting would accommodate it). If we move to a managed forum service it would probably have to stay the way it is now, bandwidth from those providers tends to be expensive.

Ignore function that works with quotes would be pretty difficult to implement actually, since the quote is just text within the post (the quotes don't have any actual relationship to the quoted post), so you'd have to do a large amount of processing on each page view to look at each quote, look up the user ID for any name that exists in a quote, and correlate that to the viewer's ignore list and then modify the post text. Definitely possible, but feels like something that would put a large burden on the server. To make it more efficient the entire way that post quotes are done would have to be changed.. different software might do that, but none of the ones I've worked with do it.

How about we be able to buy thanks? As a guy that is out of them and with the Edmonton debacle I would pay $1000 for unlimited quotes. Maybe.

You are not out of thanks. I forget the exact solution but you have to log out and log back in I think. Either that or clear your cache.

So you're telling me that there is an infinite thanks glitch?

Man that is going to debase the thanks economy

Aw man...if you could pay to boot someone off the Forum for a period of time?

That'd be wicked!

Pay $100 or something and you could have someone removed for a day? Oh the application of that...you could probably run this site for years on the profits from Election Days alone!

And then maybe take it to an 'Auction style?'

"Someone is going to pay $100 for you to be banned for a day, it'll cost you $150 to over-rule them...unless they match or beat that amount!"

Ah yes...this could become Anarchy in no time!

There's this one guy I would ban the day before and two days after all Spurs/Liverpool games! Not because I don't want to see your comments, just because it would be so funny know that you're triggered and want to post something, and can't!

I'm telling you its a genius business plan! We could run countries this way.

I mean...it could conceivable cause some 'rampage' issues of its own, but we could accommodate that.

I think for 20 plus years I've avoided cash grabs and egregious ad types, and I don't wish to change that at all.
The ads are terrible. Nobody is happy with them. How are they efficient and recommended? And by whom? The site has been bleeding users for years due to young people having no interest in them. Why accelerate the decline when you have a user base that is mostly men with disposable income in their forties? Give your head a shake.

So your solution is to come in late and be an ass to Bingo?

buy the freaking site yourself, and have those 40 somethings rolling in the dough pay you.

Someone does this basically as a labor of love, they don't need people pissing on them.

Discourse does this. Stupid easy. Either upload or just drag and drop. Proper ignore functions as well. You can also highlight a section a text and a 'Quote' button appears so you can quote the highlighted block directly into a new post. You can full ignore threads or entire forums. They don't even appear in the list of threads. Seriously the best forum software I've ever seen.

Edit: To add to this as Photon responded to it, Discourse does block quoted text. I have one blocked user in community I'm on that's hosted on Discourse. When they post, the content is hidden. When they're quoted, the content is hidden. I can choose to unhide it to view what they said but it works without issue.

Yeah their database structure for posts would have to be different to properly accommodate that. It's interesting software, just pretty expensive.

Discourse itself is free, but you still have the hosting/machine costs if you go that way. There are other manged discourse hosts for cheaper, like this:

Probably more out there, this was just the first I saw.

Yeah was looking at their managed hosting options, that one is cheaper, though they don't seem to include importing an existing site, would have to ask what they'd charge.

EDIT: And always suspicious of "managed", I'd like a truly managed solution where they take care of the whole stack (OS updates, middleware updates, etc) rather than just getting things set up or doing software update.

Not sure about others, but if we moved I don't really care about migrating everything. Active users perhaps, but anything beyond that, is it worth the effort? Maybe an archived instance could stay up. Maybe others feel differently.

Yeah thought about that, moving over users would be important and presumably if that's moving over moving over the rest wouldn't be that much more work so might as well.

An archived instance would be ok IMO but that would kind of defeat the purpose of a managed hosted forum since there'd have to be a completely separate hosting setup and maintained for the archive.

The managed service for Discourse does include importing as well as long as it doesn't take more than 3 days (then you pay $250 an hour). Other software does import from vBulletin (vBulletin 6 came out recently, XenForo, etc)

Are you sure?

But seriously, for somethings here it would be easier. Like the home improvement thread at times would be much simpler if we could just post a photo, for example.

As long as we limit it for certain posters. Nobody wants to see MoneyGuy's slide show of his trip to the box factory
