The Delhi police have announced the formation of a crack team dedicated to nabbing the elusive 'Monkey Man' and offered a reward for his -- or its -- capture.
I think it was in 2011 when Feaster used the term “whizzing passed the graveyard” when describing Backlund. I recall in 2012 that many wanted Backlund ++ to the Yotes for Kyle Turris. I remember Backs being by far the best of a mediocre group of prospects that included 1st round busts Pelech, Irving, Nemisz, Erixon.
I then remember Backlund taking a step forward and becoming a reliable 2C. Players that got the Backlund boost include Bouma and Colborne who were out of the league shortly after cashing in on their career years with Backs. The 3M line was a staple of the Monahan-Gaudreau years and it has shifted to the Mangiapane-Backlund-Coleman line that you can count on chipping in offensively and playing against other teams top lines.
Backlund and Phaneuf were really the only successful first rounds in the 200-2010 years and Backs has been more or a late bloomer where Dion made an immediate impact to fizzle out of the league before his mid-30’s. Backs enters his mid-30’s coming off his best year and being named captain. It is special to see a player have a long successful career in one city. I am happy for Backs and think this contract and captaincy make a ton of sense.

No secret I wanted to move on from him, but I'm pretty happy with how things turned out. I don't mind this contract at all, and I've been a fan of his since he was playing in Kelowna. He would have gotten more $$ and years on the open market for sure, so huge respect for him taking a pay cut to stay here.
After Backlund captained Sweden to win the World Championships in 2018 I couldn’t understand how the Flames dragged their feet telling the media they didn’t have a clear cut captain on the roster in recent years. I like this moment for the franchise, the player, and the fans. I think the Conroy - Huska - Backlund chain of leadership is going to be successful and are going to surprise all the naysayers claiming Calgary is directionless and destined for mediocrity.

I think he said “whistling past the graveyard”. Or maybe he was talking about taking a whizz, but seems unlikely.
Anyway what I love about this contract is that it lets Backlund slot in right where he belongs on this team with Coleman and Mangiapane. It’s either a quality second line or an elite third line. Either way, this salary let’s you spend in other areas.

It wasn't the "Flames" it was Sutter
And more and more it feels like all those pot shots about not having a captain in the room, that nobody was captain material, etc were direct shots at Backlund , the guy the rest of the team thought was captain

I always felt like they didn't name a new captain after Gio in case he came back either in a deadline trade (which was tough because of the salary retention rules) or as a UFA last summer. Then, after he re-signed with Toronto, it was just Sutter on a power trip last season.

Anyone that doesn't like this contract or Backs becoming captain is out of their damn mind. This type of player is so underrated because he isn't on PP1 and leading the team in points. But he's just as important.
- Plays against the best competition
- Plays on both sides of the ice
- Plays on both sides of special teams
- Still contributes on the top half of the team for points while playing defensive
An argument can be made that he helped with the development of Tkachuk. Mangiapane is better with him.
It's truly pathetic behaviour honestly. It was an emotional day for the organization then they released some news that we all could feel good about naming backlund captain. I came into this thread looking for some relief after feeling emotional from the previous news of the day and all I find is one poster being such a pathetic scumbag to another. People are hesitant to post on these boards because some make it their goal to be the main character of all the threads.
It’s just like regular society. It’s a big spectrum. There are always dicks on both ends. Usually a small percentage.
