You can never take a lot from early pre-season games but that team featured a lot of the Canucks top prospects that they hope can make the team this year.
Raty, Silovs, Rathbone, Klimovich, Woo, Podkolzin, Hoglander, Aman, McDonough.
You wouldn't have expected them to win - but you would have liked to see a bit more of fight for sure.

Made a couple shots that reminded me of the last top end RW we had. What was the most impressive to me was the difference in play and the tempo the team played at. No more ring around the boards and take low percentage shots. This was quick passes and try to penetrate the middle to get high quality scoring opportunities. It was how the team got nine of their goals and it was a pleasure to watch. Would have liked to have seen the defensive coverage in action but the Canucks were so overmatched they couldn't get anything going to where the Flames need to defend.

This.
They held on to the puck and made the extra pass in a lot of scenarios where last year they decided just to fire every puck on net.
They were told "Shot volume, shot volume, shot volume" and that they didn't have the talent to make these plays by the last coach. So nice to see them playing with a bit of confidence yesterday.

In his post-game interview Nazem Kadri was asked about changes to the systems and style, and he talked about having the chance to be more creative, and the encouragement by coaches to make skilled plays.
It is one thing to hear it from coaches, but when the players are talking about this you KNOW just how big of a difference the coaching changes are already making to this group.

Hey, at least if you're Linus Karlsson or Akito Hirose, you can say "not my table" - literally the only Canucks not to be minus on the night.

I thought the way they were carrying the puck in the zone, the way guys jumped into the play, and the patience/types of shots they made space for/took chances on were markedly different than last year.
Not saying it’s all fixed and we’re going to be so much better, or whatever, but it certainly looked looser and more creative than most of last season. Good to get that flow going in pre-season so they can carry it in to the regular season and embrace it.

As I said in the game thread - it was nice to see the PP flowing through Huberdeau (and he was making superb passes all night - one ended in a bad Lindholm fan, but oh well). The lopsided game actually took that first unit off the PP a bit - Huska went with other units later in the game as the Canucks continued to take penalties.

The Penticton Youngstars team died for your amusement. Are you not entertained?!

Curious why the building in Edmonton went from no one cares about preseason to a mostly full house over 5 or so years.
I know power packs started forcing people to get a preseason game if they wanted a pack with a premium game (Ie Toronto, Montreal, Flames on a Saturday). Not sure when power packs came out though.

You mean it's better to run our PP through Huberdeau and Lindholm instead of Toffoli and Andersson...I'm shocked.

All I can get

It would have been 9-0 with the regular Canucks lineup.

I was too oddly. I can't remember the last time I saw a pre-season line up that had no players who were for sure playing opening night and only three players who were on the bubble for make the opening night roster. It was neat to see the difference even half a team of skilled NHLers make vs that sort of line up. I wish I'd got to see this neat thing in a reversed way, but here we are.

Yeah, that is about the closest of an NHL versus AHL team game that I remember. Really shows why taking the next step is so hard

They were moving the puck into the slot all night - last year, it was around the perimeter until someone took a 30 ft wrister

I'll say this: Silovs is a very highly touted goalie prospect - carried the Canucks farm team and he won MVP at the Worlds last spring. Some people were touting him as a backup this year. It shows the difference between AHL/World cup shooters and NHL shooters.
Wolf clearly has better potential, and better minor league stats. But NHL shooters are going to be a real test for him. I liken it to minor league batters facing major league pitching for the first time.

Out of: Hoglander Podkolzin, Studnicka, Dries and Suter, at least 3 and likely 4 are going to be on the opening night roster

I could be wrong, but I feel like I saw something similar in a Flames split-squad game in Seattle last year, except the Flames actually won that game.

Forgot about Pius.
He will be on the opening night roster. New names are confusing, okay! In truth, Hirose will probably be there too, when I think about it.

I'd expect 7 canucks from last night to be on their roster at the start, or at least spend significant time on it this year:
Hoglander, Aman, Dries, Irwin, Joshua, Suter, Studnicka.
They certainly didn't send much. But none of those guys put up any knd of showing.

Of those guys you listed, they'd all be rotating in and out of the fourth line, if not waived.
Edit - Except Suter, who I missed.

Just based on capfriendly I think 7 names that played yesterday are on that forecast 22 man roster for the Canucks.
Suter, Hoglander, Joshua, Dries, Studnicka, Rathbone, Irwin.
And I'd say the expectation is that Hirose, Podkolzin, Raty could push for a spot.
So I'm not sure it's crazy to think 7/8 names that played for the Canucks yesterday could be on the opening day 23 man roster...even if it's all bottom 6 or bottom pairing type roles.
