The NHL needs to figure out how to emulate the TNT intermissions with Charles Barkley and Shaq -- those are actually entertaining and because they're former NBA legends, they know what they're talking about too. Find a couple of former NHLers like Bieksa to sit in front of a camera and let them banter.

Why not get some former CFLers. Have to try to copy but yet be original.

Charles Barkley is entertaining and interesting. Shaq is just dull.

On TNT yes but not in Canada. Canadians take hockey way too seriously. Like it's rocket science and all the viewers are experts. We're still offended by goal celebrations and running up the score.
Bieksa and Biz would be gold on TNT.

I think Subban and Bieksa would be pretty entertaining to have on the panel, but as Girly mentioned, Canadians take hockey way too seriously, so I don't think the TNT formula would work up here.

Yeah.. you'd need to find the Charles Barkley of hockey... which is unlikely.

Interesting tidbit from the Bob McCown podcast (Dave Hodge filling in as Bobcat recovers). Back in the day, Hodge beat out Alex Trebek for the HNIC hosting gig.

Word on the street was that the interviewers were frustrated by Trebek because he always answered with questions

Turned out pretty well for Trebek. He made an absolute fortune hosting Jeopardy.

Canadian TV market is vastly different than the US in a lot of ways. Sure some people might find that TNT NBA talk and intermissions good but that's not really the method that works well in Canada. It's just a different animal here.
Case in point. We took 2 legends from TSN in Jay Onrait and Dan O'toole who were very successful in Canada doing their light hearted jokes and comical routine, that kind of flopped when they went to the US.
The US market a lot of the times is all about fighting and anger, trying to "own" the other side. You see it in news, politics, sports, culture and more. I have seen debates about who's better between Jordan or Lebron and it get's HEATED in a weird way.
2 Canadian former NHL player's getting into it about Gretzky or Lemieux or Howe etc wouldn't make for great tv. Having a HNIC host like Amber jump in with insults about Bobby Orr being #1 to stir the pot for ratings isn't my idea of great tv.
Hockey is a different sport and culture, I really hope we don't turn it into the NBA, NFL, Soccer or whatever. It's ok for it to be what it is and for the other sports, which I like, to be their own.

Jay and Dan flopping was more a case of timing and location rather than anything else. They were on a brand new channel that no one watched and on a show that is the same format as one that has cratered viewers for the last 15 years because of the internet. People becoming stars from a sports highlight show is something from the 80s/90s.
And your other point is not at all what the TNT NBA show is. Its guys cracking on each other. They are not at all the embrace debate guys.

So...if Bieksa is coming back...can we get Ferland on the panel?
But they have to sit directly beside each other.
