Kochetkov is a stud - once Andersen/Raanta get hurt again, his path is clear.

I don't think they were close. I was only commenting on who was even had firsts that theoretically could. There weren't a lot of first rounders available to pick up and the ones that were are really late.

Brad taking L after L lately. Lose our two best players. Short on futures in the recent drafts and future drafts. Weak prospect pool. Missing playoffs. Then he stands by.

He says no offers made sense yet also says its the most 1st rounders he's seen moved and has stated that its a really deep draft. Other managers were able to capitalize. Probably becayse he was late to the party.

He's been extremly ineffective.

I think people should be happy we didn't do anything dumb, and he also was realistic at looking at dumping some guys potentially to get some assets back for the long term.

Also said he is opening up spots for guys from the farm and Coronato which is a positive.

I will believe the last part when we see it, because he said the same thing during camp and the roster was already set in stone.

I am just wondering if we have Troy Stecher because Michael Stone is injured. Sutter wanted a body for the remaining games? Surely he's just there as a replacement part and without any deeper expectations.

Sad news to hear that it’s very unlikely Kylington joins the team this year. I hope he’s able to recover from his personal issue. Would have been huge to have him back but obviously his wellness is most important at this point. All the best to him and family.

Imagine if he put us in a rebuild mode by selling off some of our best players for picks. Would be happy with a team that's not competitive while we wait for these picks to develop?

Right now the only sort of early one is Ottawa one (currently 13) for Chychrun. Then the Hronek deal which is a baffling one, currently a 17, and protected if it rises to top 12. The rest are all 24 and beyond (the Flames were never trading with Edmonton).

No one is trading a top 10 pick with Bedard on the line. So the choices were pretty limited.

I would think he wanted a reliable 6th defenseman who could fit in.

I doubt he is that dumb. He’s following ownerships mandate. Nothing changes until ownership does. It’s like the Sens when Melnyk was around.

Must have lost faith in Nick DiSimone or Nicolas Meloche. Or keeping them available for a Wranglers run.

Andersson/Hanafin/Weegar/Tanev/Zadorov/Gilbert seemed good enough. Now Gilbert is going to have to sit most likely, and he's been a pleasant surprise.

Carolina is weird to me. 2nd in the League but didn't make any moves and not in that dissimilar situation from the Flames contract wise over the next 18 months.

Staal, Fast, Stastny, Stepan, Gostisbehere, DeHaan, Raanta, Andersen are UFAs this offseason.

Aho, Teravainen, Martinook, Pesce, Skjei, Chatfield are UFAs after next season.

Necas is an RFA due a big raise after next year as well.

You would have thought this was the year to move some futures to try to make a run...but nope.

If there was a team that would have made sense to give Calgary a lot for a Backlund, Toffoli, or Lindholm it was them.

Although I guess they probably liked the cheap additions of Puljujarvi and Gostisbehere and go with what got them into 2nd to start with.

Dennis Gilbert has been inconsistent with his play. I'm thinking Stetcher is being brought in to see what he can do along side Zaradov.

How so? He's playing a 6th defenseman role, and he's out there hitting hard, backchecking, making the odd rush, and not making any major gaffes (as far as I remember).

I don't disagree Stecher might be the 6th going forward, but what's Gilbert supposed to be doing that he's inconsistent on?

I'm just glad they didn't sell low or buy high.

I am willing to accept that the flames are what they are this year.

The most frustrating thing for me currently is the crappy weather is delaying golf season from getting my mind off of hockey.

Think its time Zadorov sits hes been having a rough time for the last little while.

He's been extremly ineffective.
Or he makes trades that have little value and fans complain about how terrible he is as a GM. I would rather stand pat if the offers were weak. There's plenty of opportunities to change this group and maybe new partners emerge in the summer. Why trade for the sake of making a trade? Should we settle for a late first round pick for Lindholm or Backlund when maybe they get you more quality in the summer?

The next argument will be that lots of moves were made and players with low value got above average returns. Ultimately you need a partner to dance. With the season the Flames are having, we are selling at low value. Other GM's know this. The appetite many fans have is to rebuild and burn it to the ground. Fair points, but lets be smart about this. Just because there was lots of action doesn't mean we should have been involved if the value was truly lacking.

And finally some will argue that the value was there but he was ineffective and still believes this is a good team (which he did admit). But let's be real, Murray Edwards runs this team. If he says he's not entertaining a rebuild then there is nothing Tre or any other GM can do. He handcuffs the group with the hope of getting some playoff revenue. There's plenty of blame to go around for this season but you're not going to set a new course with ownership not willing to deviate from the plan.
