I don’t think the roster is that bad. We have good center depth and a pretty strong defensive core. But this refusal to play in the slot or in front of the net is baffling. It’s just dump in, 50/50 puck battle, cycle, point shot, rinse, repeat. That plus poor goaltending just doesn’t work. I still even think with a better coach this is likely a fringe contender in say the barely squeak over 100 points line but there would be at least hope.

On paper it actually is, or was. Basically everyone, across the NHL, agreed on that at the start of the year

The coaches job is to optimize the roster through player usage and to get the guys playing confidently. Darryl has done the exact opposite of that

The players aren’t blameless, but this team has had the same problems all year and the coaching staff hasn’t been able to fix any of them

The screen was definitely there on the 2nd one, but that’s where Marky’s size and positioning should do a lot of the work…and it just isn’t.
