Gurriel also from what I’ve read is more of a leader on this team so likely more value to having him as the 4th OF.

Not disagreeing but a leader sitting on the bench doesn’t offer much credibility. If this is the price for relievers I’m hoping they keep Gurriel. Tapia and Zimmer are off the books too, so it’s clear they have their eyes on a signing.

Feels a little light but at the same time I can appreciate that the market for a soon to be FA corner OF probably wasn't robust. Not sure Teo was going to return much more than that, and I do think he made the most sense to move out of the OF.
Really like Swanson's Savant profile and I like that this frees up both roster space and cash, but that needs to be filled by a lefty bat to give the lineup more flexibility.
Hopefully the prospect gives them some trade capital. So while not exciting it makes a lot of sense

As we saw last year even a 4th OF (Tapia) is going to get a bunch of at bats. You can’t presume that Springer will be healthy for a full season. Gurriel I guess is more just the general LF in this lineup but we know Whit can play OF too.

If Swanson is for real they just added another Romano to the back end of the BP and he has 3 years of control left.
They also freed up some money and im sure they have a plan to replace Teo. Hopefully the plan is to add a CF (preferably one that bats left) and then move Springer to RF.

Apparently they have shown interest in Brandon Nimmo

I’m also very curious to read the tea leaves to see what does this mean for the catchers? Are they safe? So many questions.

I would think Gurriel will stay for sure, however I doubt he is a 4th outfielder
Rather the outfield would have Gurriel, Springer and LH centerfielder (either by trade or signing)
My guess they will also improve the bench by replacing Tapia and Zimmer with a higher quality 4th outfielder

Can already see the overused Finding Nemo about to come to light.
Edit: I’d say he’s good enough. Not spectacular but a comparable to Teoscar.

This does feel a lot like a Tampa type of trade. Deal a solid contributor for some random underrated reliever and a high ceiling prospect. We’ve seen the Rays so many of these over the years as they’ve constantly reloaded the team. Many have worked out wonderfully for them but not all. Who knows if this will but they were never going to extend Teo so glad they got something rather than lose him for nothing. Could they have got more? Maybe but I think his value was likely lower than what Jays fan thinks. Glad he was here though and I’ll continue rooting for him going forward.

Definitely a likeable guy, though his contract situation and injury history probably led to this. Not earth shattering but hopefully they can focus more during games. I know it’s a controversial statement but the jumping around every two seconds got to me when they were in tight or losing situations. Gotta focus at times.

This is a good trade for the Jays IMO. A high leverage arm for the bullpen and a prospect with top of the rotation potential.

Don't mind this deal at all. While Teo was a plus bat he sure was a liability in the field and his give af level appeared pretty low at times. He really did seem like a great guy but at this point I think Gurriel is the better player. It'll be interesting to see where this leads though.

Is he top of the rotation potential? I read he was their number 8 prospect on the depth chart.

Jeff Passan thinks so. He also went to high school in Alberta apparently.
8th ranked prospect seems OK to me. I wonder if Hernandez was ever rated that highly with the Astros?

If that’s the case sounds amazing. You never really know with baseball prospects as they rocket up the charts and also drop on their face just as fast. I’m still a little skeptical of such a claim but if he is that’s great. I can see a few positive additions to the bullpen such as Kikuchi, Ryu and Pearson, and if two of three can figure it out that would be great. I’m personally on the belief that pushing everyone down a notch would help things out dramatically. That means starting a true undisputed Ace. But with few this year on the market, and the price being high I don’t think it’ll happen. Would love to see someone like Scherzer at the top of the rotation followed by Manoah and Gausman. Brings some major league credibility and confidence.

Baseball prospect rankings might be the most inexact science in North American Professional sports.
In 2021 Jared Kelinic was the Mariners top prospect and one of the top guys in Baseball ahead of Julio Rodriguez. How does that look today?
I remember when the Blue Jays traded Scott Rolen to the Reds and initially people thought the Jay's were going to get Yonder Alonso and the sentiment was that they were all Randy Marsh after encountering a spooky ghost...well when the trade came out with Edwin Encarnacion as the piece....there was a collective groan "E5 sucks how horrible is this". He'll never supplement our elite young core of Hill, Lind, and Snyder. Well of those 4 guys who ended up being the best Blue Jay? Was Alonso ever much more than average outside of the 2017 seson?
As you say no one in Houston batted an eye when they moved Hernandez...and he may never have emerged in that system either.
