Be nice to have everything buttoned up before the regular season and we can all focus on the games.

The only thing I gleaned from that is it seems like everyone is on board for a long contract and they are still hammering out details. Doesn’t sound like any tactics are being used on either side to drive up/down the price.
It doesn't have to be nefarious, but that is exactly the agent and Treliving's jobs. To drive the price up or down for their bosses.

I am surprised that there is not more leaking from this negotiation? It seems like if both sides want it done, there would be insiders that are able to hear what they are working on.
Weegar said "he would give the nod when he thinks it's fair." So he is probably waiting until the last minute to see how high the Flames go.

Yeah, after last year it’s the last thing I’d want to worry about during the season.

Everything I’ve seen about Treliving tells me he steers clear of “tactics” and is all about negotiation being a matter of science - valuations, comparables and what he can afford. He doesn’t seem to engage in mind games and they don’t work on him.

I hope this get done and comes in at less than 7 per, but it may just have to be 7 mil to get done.

What a predicament

That does not mean it is Weegar. What he is saying there is basically: I leave it up to my agent, but I give the final say... which I think is probably how virtually all of these negotiations are done. It's both parties negotiating, Tre will also give a nod when he thinks it's fair... when both parties 'nod' a deal gets done. Based on everything we're hearing, it doesn't seem like they are stuck on anything major like dollars or term, my guess is they are now discussing things like signing bonus structure, NMC/NTCs, etc. Perhaps they are a few hundred K apart, but I highly doubt there is any significant discrepancy there.

I'm between you guys.

I don't think there's any huge issue to overcome, but Weegar's comments did contain a hint of "when they improve their offer enough we will get something done", which is certainly a tactic of some sort.

Huh?

He said the pieces are here to win for a long time, nothing about the roster.

LOL ... moving too fast.

"offer" not "roster"

Fixed it above.

We are all guessing to some extent but an inference we can make with high degree of certainty is that BT does use the clock and it's been used on him. He uses it when he has leverage and Johnny used it on him when he had it (then inexplicably abandoned that negotiation to make 10s of millions less in a worse market with a worse team). But I digress...

The wildcard here is that both sides want a deal done, clearly. They're just trying to figure out who has more leverage. And maybe with the reporting done in the last few days, treliving has figured out that it's him. I don't know for sure that BT is using time to squeeze Weegar, but he has absolutely done if before, multiple times.

I really hate this tactic. "I'm not going to negotiate my contract during the season, I want to focus on hockey"... yeah, that's why you have an agent. He can negotiate without you being involved. Once they've got a deal on the table that he thinks is worth taking to you he'll do that, other than that you don't need to have any involvement whatsoever. This is why you pay that guy. It's insulting to try to sell this type of posturing to the public as "I'm focused on the team and winning".

What he is really saying is make your best offer before the season starts, and I’ll decide if it’s enough to get me to sign or play out the season and test UFA.

He is trying to impose a deadline to shorten the process. The closer a player gets to UFA, the more likely he is to test the market. A player can always buy insurance in that last year to protect himself against a career ending injury.

I am guessing the Flames are offering 6.5 and the Weegar camp is asking 7. Just meet at 6.75 and get it done.

Given that Valimaki likely isn’t going to pan out the Flames probably should try and get a deal done as the cupboards are pretty empty as I see some potential 3rd pairing guys and an offensive guy that’s boom/bust in the system.

I imagine Weegars camp is around 7.75ish right now.

I think he comes in at or just above 7m.

Anywhere around 7 million would be a decent contract given what has been handed out recently to supposed top line d-men.
