Finding money and investors to keep the team in Calgary.

So the Flames were looking to replace the Saddledome 18 years after it opened?

replacing a building takes a bit of time (as we've seen), you don't wait until it's past it's time before you start the process

Make the team not go out of business.
The currency equalization plan (essentially revenue sharing just for Canadian teams) really helped, and then the salary cap cemented things.

Honest question - how/what has the city screwed up here?
The only thing I can think of is blundering the message a bit AFTER the deal had fallen apart. And even then it was like 7/9 tweets were totally fine, and a couple were dumb.
I'll also say that there doesn't necessarily need to be any 'villain' here at all; it's an inherently dumb scenario with no truly sensible resolution. There's just no reason the city should be the ones to wade any further into nonsense territory to make it work.

How many actual big draw nights a year are there? 10? 15? So maybe a couple thousand people come in each time for one of these events? Because that's the only actual economic gain. An arena existing doesn't create disposable income in the populace, it just redirects it. The dollars that eventually get to the city are what? I'd be hard pressed to believe that it would be enough to even break even on the quarter billion plus being handed over, let alone have a benefit, over the lifespan of the arena.
|
We’d draw different conclusions but I’d agree with pretty much all that.
Calgary is not big enough for an arena to have its own economic return.
No different than a convention centre, science centre, performing arts centre, zoo.. you name it, the city can choose not to have it. Or have it as a money loser.
I think Calgary should have an event centre/arena. So any cost share between the Flames and City is a win as a taxpayer.
To be clear - IMO the reverse applies for the Flames. They will never make a business case on their own. Every dollar the city contributes is a win.
This should be the easiest deal is history.

This is 100% accurate.
Instead of arguing for or against there is also a little imagineering that could go on here to reclaim the area permanently year round.
Wouldn't it be great to have restaurants and skating paths and family areas surround an event centre and arena? Bon fires on weekends. Stampede board should be on this. Keeping the torch lit in winter so to speak.
Get some corporate in on building out the area and integrating it better and extending it.
I just see opportunity to something that is inevitable infrastructure requirement by the city.

Guys, I've got this figured out.
We need to get Gondek and Treliving to the negotiating table.
Treliving will get this done and it'll be a fair deal!
Sorted! You're welcome.

you don't think taxes pay for anything else that people reap financial rewards for...taxes aren't proportional to use.
An event center is getting built...city will pay some or all. Trust me they are better off with a permanent tenant helping with all the bills. Is it fair? maybe not, life's not fair though.

He was never barred. He let the negotiations do what they do and then completely supported the result. She absolutely interfered and made a mockery of her new Mayorship and its counsel.

The Event Centre committee met for about 2 and a half hours on Wednesday. Most of that time was behind closed doors (fully expected at this stage in the process).
https://livewirecalgary.com/2022/09/...re-coun-sharp/
Quote:
Coun. Sonya Sharp, who chairs the committee, said that the city is speaking to Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) via the third party. She said Calgarians should remain optimistic that would continue, though there’s no timeline on a potential deal.
Sharp said that it’s important to know the city’s priorities for capital projects before the 2023-2026 budget. Understanding what they might need for this is best, but the conversation will take more time, she said.
“What I can say is administration is working as hard as administration can be working,” she said.
“In city speed, this has been light speed.”
The reason why Calgarians aren’t privy to more information is they’re rebuilding the relationship with CSEC, Sharp said.
“Yes, it looks like we’re having conversations behind the scenes and that’s not good. But what we’ll say is that when the time is right to let Calgarians know what’s going on, we will,” Sharp said.
“We have to look for the benefits and success for everybody – and that’s including Calgarians. So, you need to make sure we have the most optimal information to share at the right time.”

No doubt things were bleak at one time but the landscape has changed significantly since then. IMO the Canadian TV money has done more to solidify Canadian franchises than either of those two things.
