The difference between this and CalgaryNext seems to be that the arena itself is guaranteed to be privately funded

I've been to the area a couple of times, but don't know it well. Looking at a map, Tempe seems to be about the same distance from Phoenix proper as Glendale. What's the difference between the two areas? Proximity to Scottsdale?

That is a strong word, but you're right that's what they are claiming right now.

You're right, perhaps too strong of a word, but I have a hard time imagining them being able to sell much public funding for an arena for THAT team to Tempe City Council tbh.

Absolutely. I'm just having a hard time believing these guys are really good for taking on $1.7 billion of development costs centered around a hockey team in Arizona.
We'll see.

Just read this reddit post. Covers it nicely. On average 40 minutes will be cut from the huge majority of the fanbase and hockey communities in the valley

Also, I believe this is being led by the city, who want to redevelop this land. CalgaryNext was never a priority for the city, and worked against many of the city's actual priorities.

I don't know the area at all, but just using Google Maps' estimates, the distance from Downtown Phoenix to the location of the new arena is just over half the distance from Downtown to the Gila River Arena. More-importantly, the rush hour travel time estimate is half as long.

The Remparts just drew 15,000 people to a junior game....
The fact that Bettman lets this continue is just nuts. Arizona is a dead market and the fact that the league continues the attempt is laughable.

Coyotes claim they are kicking in $1.7 billion. We'll see if Tempe agrees that their costs are only $200 million as this does have the smell of Calgary Next to it. How much other infrastructure spending will be required?
|
Coyotes are really spending 1.7 billion? That doesn't seem very plausible.

I see this as nothing but a positive, book flight to Phoenix, see NHL game for 1/4 the price in Calgary, no problem getting great seats. Plus Phoenix in January is a nice break from our winter

It's a lukewarm take at best.

damn onions

Why is that a lukewarm take?
Better measure would likely be TV audience but would imagine Quebec would kill them in that measure too.
One thing you do have to wonder though is if Quebec was such a great market, why aren’t these owners / smart business people scrambling to move their franchises there?

As has been said many times already, there isn't really anything the league can do as long as there's a willing owner in the existing market.
The league has never -- and will never -- force a team to move. That's a can of worms none of the owners would want to open because there's always a chance they could be next.
Every time a team has relocated (at least in the "modern" NHL), it was either because the existing owner chose to move to a new market or the team was sold to new owners with the express purpose of moving the team.
Through all the hassles in Phoenix/Glendale/Tempe, there's always been someone willing to own the team and keep it in the area.

BS aside, what do you guys think of the design of the arena?
To me this would've been a great fit for The Flames. Not having a Saddledome as part of the skyline will suck and imo, this kills the crap CSEC came up with.

If this thing gets done.. and i'm sitting 50/50 after last night it'll be awesome for me to see a new Saddledome in my forever home town. I pass the Tempe Lakefront every day on my way to work.

Yeah I don't understand all the hate her over the idea of an NHL team in Phoenix.
Brings up the possibility of visiting a nice climate in winter where you can probably get easily available tickets to see the Flames.
A whole lot fewer people here would travel to QC for a game. And from what I read in the other threads, there is consensus among CPers that they would never root for another Canadian team.
So why this desire to see a team in QC?
