Chris Rock handled that like a champ, not only in the moment managing to stay in tv mode but then afterward said he's not pressing any charges.
Will Smith handled it like a child.
Of course being Hollywood I'm sure there's a lot people happy that Smith stood up to a bully that would dare make fun of celebrities

I don't think Will Smith or Chris Rock are that good of actors to pull off the adrenaline rush they both seem to be experiencing after.
It's also a career affecting bit to pull off, they would have revealed the joke after had it been one.

Do people claiming “fake” even understand what Will Smith built his career on? What does he has to gain from being violent and cursing on tv? For, the first time ever???
Ugh I hate the constant “that’s fake!” more than I hate self aggrandizing speeches like Smiths.

Yeah no way that's fake.
At first I thought it had to be, but the swearing then crying after, there's no way

You know that the Oscars are done when the only thing people talk about in a 5 page thread is a 30 second incident completely unrelated to anything actually in the show.

The easiest way to tell this is legit is to just think of the outcomes here:
- Chris Rock is now permanently meme'd, and it's a really embarrassing meme to boot. Even for a comedian, it's tough to believe he'd voluntarily want to be immortalized as the new "What did the five fingers say to the face".
- Will Smith, image conscious as he is, looks like an even bigger #### then everyone already thought he was before the slap. Pretty clear Jada makes him go do that. For him to get more upset at a tame comedian joke then he publicly has for his wife ####ing whoever? Not good.
Of course the Oscars have been a ratings sieve for a while and that feeds into the possibility this was all a work (although cutting 8 awards from the broadcast and STILL having the show close to four hours suggests they truly don't care about ratings). But both guys come out of this for the worse, Will by a lot. Can't imagine they'd voluntarily accept the end result here.

Late to the party. I am stunned that a man walked on stage at the Oscars and open hand slapped another man in the head. What the hell was going through Smith's head? Bad joke aside you just can't do that.

I must be getting old and crotchety — I’m mostly annoyed at seeing this Will Smith thing all over social media, and couldn’t give two ****’s that he slapped someone.
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted…

Hopefully Gervais does next year's Oscars...
Smith: "Keep my wife's name out..."
Gervais: "Oh f##k off. I don't care."

wife and I watched the awards last night.
More out of habit than anything, plus she likes too check out the dresses.
I won't comment of the Chris Rock thing as it's been done to death, but god the awards were boring.
Not much the awards can do to make them more entertaining. maybe fire the writers as the jokes are mostly lame. just let the presenters wing it.
Maybe cut the mikes of people who start a laundry list of names. thank your spouse and kids and move on.
I cringed when Liza Minnelli was on stage. she seemed so out of it that it was sad and embarrassing to see her up there.
Funniest line I think was from Woody Harrelson.
When he said he's been nominated 3 times and this was the most words he's spoken, and presenting is where it's at.
a couple of moments, but overall, I give the show a D

It appears Will Smiths marriage is open to everything but jokes.
He slapped him because paper beats rock.
The joke onslaught is going to be relentless.
Regardless I can’t believe they just normalized assault, on live TV, and rewarded him for it?
Just one more reason why these muppets should never be celebrated for anything other than pretending to be someone they are not.

Rock showed incredible restraint by not making a "someone must have told Will this was the BET awards. Jada, put that chair down!" Joke.

It's hard to see any logic in staging such a thing. Winning an Oscar is a probably big deal to Smith and where he thinks his career is going. I can't imagine he'd willingly agree to overshadow that for a cheap stunt.
The Oscars don't have a lot to gain here either. They want people watching so they can promote their movies, and have lots of people fawn over them, but I can't see them resorting to a ratings stunt just for the sake of raising ratings. It's not moving the needle on the movie industry or ABC's (Disney) revenues. Unless they promote a re-match next year, I can't see much of a bump in ratings this year or next. I imagine they are quite annoyed that this overshadows the award winning movies.

Name a single event, other than wrestling, where a guy getting up out of his chair and assaulting the host mid-show wouldn't be the biggest talking point of the evening.
The fact people are talking about this isn't related to the fact the Oscars are on a huge decline.

Apparently you can? The whole thing is just cringe for Will Smith, though it's been clear that he's been unstable and battling something for a while now if you follow anything he does on social media.
