I live in Asia and have travelled to all sorts of seemingly remote places in recent times... Bhutan, Micronesia, rural Cambodia... The last time I can recall being without reception for several hours was a couple weeks ago driving Hwy 93 from Banff to Radium.

The difference is a lot of those "remote" areas in those countries are still heavily populated. No one lives on highway 93. You would also want to put towers somewhere high up, but that's challenging there.

I always thought they couldn't build European style tunneled highways because of the Pacific ring of fire and the earthquakes. Could be wrong.

Well, I mean Vietnam is half the land size of Alberta, but has roughly 3 times the population of Canada. It's pretty justifiable to have cell towers even in remote areas when your land mass is so much smaller, and population density, even in remote areas is most likely far greater than Canada. Canada has huge chunks of land that don't have any people living on.

My pipe (tunnel?) dream is to just straight shot across the ranges from Calgary to Invermere with tunnels. 2 lane divided and throw a train line in there too for good measure.

There's a pretty significant difference here. In your examples they were rehabilitating the decks and substructures of old bridges while the bridges were still in use by general traffic. In this case, they don't have to slowly remove small pieces of decks and replace them or anything. It's going to be a wholesale fix on a road closed to traffic. Where there's a will, there's a way (to do it much faster).

Vietnam is definitely an odd comparison. The country is like 100-150km wide for most of its length and if you look at a map of their towers it's basically a single line up most of the country:
https://www.cellmapper.net/map?MCC=4...apType=roadmap
And of course their telecommunications are largely state-owned so they can offer services in unprofitable areas, whereas Canada has an oligopoly. Just like Canada Post will deliver places where UPS and FedEx won't.

Cell tower infrastructure is being installed. I think the plan was to have most of it up and running by the end of 2022. Then again the pandemic may be delaying that

I think this image is wrong.
The original includes Pakistan and Japan - two big hitters. But they're excluded on this map. That goes for most of Korea as well.

Interesting. Out of curiosity, I was going to ask on the OP if the circle could be any smaller...

Sounds like the Coq highway may be closed for months now. Am wondering how Transmountain will be dealing with both their own pipeline and construction challenges in that terrain as well as significantly reduced accessibility and housing support. Or maybe with all those construction teams already in that area they can be re-deployed to help with cleanup and initial fill/grading in some areas?
