Without researching there are tax benefits state to state, so it may be more beneficial to go there. Plus he didn’t seem keen on coming back so it’s all good.

I wonder if park/division factors played into the decision as well. Get out of the AL East and not many parks more pitcher friendly than Safeco. Try and sustain some quality numbers and opt out after year 3 to really cash in?
Such a fun offseason so far and likely a bunch more deals before a potential lockout in 3 days. Happy that the Yanks and Sox havent really been players at all.

It’s great but they’re probably concerned with the lockout and the possibility of paying these guys for not playing.

I can see Ray wanting to go to a pitcher friendly park. He did have a issue with HRs last year.

Seager is basically a replacement level glove at this point so I wonder if he'll play second and Semien moves back to short?
Such unreal money for a player who has been oft injured lately.

Safe to say it came down to the compensatory pick, and they saw a similar quality pitcher in Gausman? $5M difference in total contract I'd have been hard pressed to not go forward with Ray if I was the Jays FO.

Ray is a fastball/slider pitcher.
Gausman is a fastball/splitter pitcher.
If you’re betting which will age better, I’d go Gausman.

Just noticed that Jays legend Kirby Yates signed with the Braves. Good for him I guess.

Apparently they already have tried.
It would cost a ton of prospect capital, and then they only have him guaranteed for two seasons before he either walks or gets a massive contract, right about the same time the core players will be needing/getting massive contracts. A move like that would very likely shorten the contention window, but it would be a huge boost while that window is open.
I could certainly see them doing it though. Would be very exciting.

I wonder if Javier Baez is a target for the Jays?
SS/2B/3B
He'd be a pretty solid fit being able to play those three positions.

Getting J-Ram would be a wet dream. An absolute stud of a player who continually fly's under the radar despite being a top 5 MVP candidate in any given year. You just wonder what you would have to give up for him and his unbelievably cheap contract. Probably something like Gurriel, Biggio, 2 top tier prospects, and a pick.
A player like Baez would be intriguing but I don't know how his personality would fit. I think one of the underrated aspect of the Jays is how well they all seem to get along and you wonder what adding a big personality like that would add.

Cleveland would want an outfielder, two prospects and a pick. The Jays can afford that. Maybe toss in one of the catchers if that is what it takes.

The Detroit Tigers are closing in on a 7-year, $140 million deal with an opt-out clause with free-agent shortstop Javier Baez, a source told ESPN's Buster Olney.

Non tender deadline for arb eligible players today, not a ton of non tender candidates for the Jays, one I can see being non tendered is Trent Thornton.

Jon Morosi tweeting that the Mariners and Jays are the perceived favorites for Kris Bryant. Interesting.

Very interesting to see that the Jays wanted to ensure they got one of Gausman or Ray. Offered them the same deal but when it came down to it Ray was going to initially wait until the new collective bargaining agreement but later changed his mind while Gausman made it clear he was not going to wait.
As a Jays fan it would have been nice to see Ray return but I really think they made the right decision ensuring they got Gausman.
