At the end of the day the Canucks view OEL as having value. They said it last year, that they expect a change of scenery away from the tire fire that Arizona has been behind the scenes will give OEL a renewed lease on life.

Is that true? Probably not.

Again... do you think you're contending next year or what?

Some kind of all-in, short term splurge this is, at a huge long term & futures cost.

I guess Benning doesn't have to worry about the team in 3-6 years because he won't be there.

I have never wanted Lanny_McDonald to be right so much as I do with regards to his assessment of Garland.

So apparently Bill Armstrong really is the GM that Arizona has needed all these years.

What an amazing week for Arizona.

Well. F******. Done.

Yeah, I think Garland is a piece that a team thinking they are about to contend adds. A younger Kessel, or Pageau.

Sucks for the Coyotes to lose Garland but it likely has to happen to get the team to a better place long term.
Arizona seems to be gathering a whole flock of albatrosses

Buffalo and Arizona looking to storm out of their years of futility with competent management.

They just have to nail their picks this year, and keep their eyes on those '22 and '23 drafts as well.

Arizona is having a wicked offseason.

OUT:
Conor Garland
OEL (1m retained)

IN:
2021 pick 9
2021 2nd
2022 2nd
2022 2nd
2022 2nd
Cond. 2023 3rd
2022 7th
2023 7th
Shayne Gostisbehere
Antoine Roussel
Andrew Ladd
Loui Eriksson
Jay Beagle

They took on a few short-term bad contracts, added a really interesting player in Gostisbehere, retained $1m on the awful OEL deal they desperately needed to move, traded a guy in Garland who was at odds on a contract...

... And added a flat-out ridiculous number of draft picks.

And remember while it was reported that OEL was willing to consider other destinations this year, he probably was still only going to waive for VAN or BOS.

He should already have been fired last year. This mess is the result of him having handed out all those terrible UFA deals to replacement level players, first of all, and that was clear last summer... but how does the Toffoli deal not break the camel's back? Guy makes bad decisions when he's signing UFAs and bad decisions when he doesn't.

Treliving must be overjoyed, he looks so competent by comparison.

Do we have any overpaid garbage to trade away? Seems as though there’s a run on guys like that today.

Buchnevich was probably the best name player to be traded today, and he arguably got the worst return.

Sadly, I like this trade for Vancouver. The last few years of OEL's contract will obviously be a giant albatross, but for now at least, they are way batter for the same cap hit (this year anyway). Put me in the camp that says OEL will be better (or maybe lore accurately, less bad) in a better environment.

By no means does this deal solve their cap problems beyond this year though, in fact it makes them worse.

Plus, a high 1st and a 2nd in a deep draft? Big price to pay.

But Garland will really add to their top 6.

So Calgary bemoans the fact their long time 38 year old captain had to be exposed and taken in the ED. AZ signs OEL to a huge contract at 27, makes him captain and then 3 years later gets him to waive his NMC, sells him off and cheers mightily for shedding his salary.

I'm just not 100% sold on him. He had a good season last year, but he was also getting as many as 22 minutes a night on a not deep team. I could see him being the type of player who production nosedives as soon as he has to compete for chances in a deeper roster. With his lack of physical game, he's useless if not scoring.

None with any significant term while bringing in an absolute dump truck of draft picks moving forward.

Bill Armstrong is doing EXACTLY what that organization needed after Chayka put them in hell.

This seems like
A bunch of short-term crap for a really large single piece of long-term crap
And then 9th overall for Garland

That's about it right?
