Sad to see Gio go, but also relieved Treliving didn't make a expensive side deals to keep him. Maybe he will resign as a UFA and finish his career here in Calgary.
Now hopefully Tre will make good use of the extra cap room and not F it up like he did with Brouwer/Neal.

Sports isn’t fun anymore. AAV, cap space, asset management.
We just lost a tremendous and giving individual, a pillar of the Calgary community and one of the best to ever wear the Flaming C.
Gio was a stellar captain, teacher and leader.
I’m not the least bit conflicted. I’m very sad.
Word. Undrafted and grinds his ass off, earning a Norris and being a franchise player. And we say goodbye to him through a leaked list due to some whack ass expansion draft rules and accounting. So soulless.

How exactly would you have tackled this situation?
I wanted to trade Gio 2 years ago when his value was at peak and would have done that.
I also wouldn't have him as my captain if this is where he's at in priority to the team.
I also would have brought in a player(s) who are valued enough to be protected and captain material, as the team is clearly lacking other captain options.
This tells me the team is lacking players who are both our top players and top leaders.
Most teams have guys who wear both of those hats as Gio did in the past.
I still think Gio to Toronto last trade deadline was the right move for both teams, Flames could have retained. Would have made a lot more sense for Toronto to use their first on Gio instead of Foligno.
Would have allowed them to pair Brodie + Gio, and Reilly + Muzzin to really shore up their top 4.
Gio (25-50% retained) + Rittich for 1st + Dermott
That should have been the deal at the trade deadline. Toronto could have protected Gio instead of Holl and probably still end up losing McCann anyways.

So easy to say in hindsight but you realize Treliving reports to the owners. I can imagine that conversation going well. The Flames finished first in the division and Gio had just won the Norris and there is no replacement for him. No way they trade him.

To me, the whole "playing your entire career for one team" thing is making a big deal out of nothing. I would rather the team care more about winning than anyone's feelings. Call it cut throat or whatever but the team should be looking to maximize asset value and doing what is best for the team. The Flames have historically held on to players for too long and lost them for nothing or next to nothing. Some people say that UFA's look at how a team treats its players when they're thinking about signing there and that's probably true. But if a team can maximize asset value and actually win, it probably looks even better.
Gio could have been traded to the rangers yesterday but it sounds like the team was trying to find a way to keep him instead of accepting that he was going to be lost regardless.
I really hope they look at moving players instead of letting them walk away for nothing.
