Eberle seems to be pretty good. Well at least Edmonton got Strome, who turned his game around. Oh wait, not in Edmonton - they traded him for Spooner. Who they traded for Gagner. Who they sent with 2 second round picks for Andrei (no postseason points) Athanasiou. Who they might just have to let walk since he’s an RFA with arb rights and will get probably $3.5-4M.

Imagine going back 5 years and telling an Oiler fan that in 2020, Jordan Eberle was going to score a massive double OT GWG in the Conference Finals at Rogers Place while wearing a blue & orange uniform.

Eberly was always clutch. His WJC performances were among the most memorable of the last couple of decades. It's just that the Oilers messed him up for a few years, as they do to so many talented young players.

On a more serious note, while I wish Tampa to lose this series, I do think Cooper and Trotz are the most likable head coaches in NHL. It is hard not to like them. Consistent results. Great strategy and game planning against the opponent. Great temper/demeanor behind the bench and post-game. Loved and respected by most players. What's not to like?

that was the gist of it anyway and I 100% agree

Apparently, Tonelli gave him permission to continue wearing it.

The next time Rittich played an actual game on that same Edmonton ice in August, after beating the playoff-less Oilers in January, it looked like he never had picked up that stick, while he let in 3 awful goals.
And after that stick drop in January he went 3 and 5, let in an average of around 4 goals a game, and was pulled in 2 other games before the Covid break (and also the Oiler game here where he had to go back in after the Talbot fight).
Point is, I understand the desire for players to have personality, but you need to back it up or balance it with your play not just in one game, but consistently, and then in big games like playoff games, for example.
Varlomov has been a solid goalie his career, and specifically this playoffs, and showing emotion in a double OT conference Final elimination game, as he has been the goalie of record so far for the Isles and getting his team to within 6 games of winning the Stanley Cup, has a little more leeway than to do that.

I wanted to give Varlamov a crack here, would have looked good in Red. Eberle too. I am cheering for the Islanders for sure.

A duel of goalies that could have been ours? Sounds painful and fun.

Hate to break it to you, but literally every starting goalie in the conference finals could have been ours, and some of the backups too.

Well, we never really had a chance at Vasilevsky.
But your point is reasonable. We did have more than a chance to get any of Varlamov, Lehner, Khudobin in just the last calendar year.
What does that say about our management in your opinion?

Flames could have drafted vasilevski but traded down to 're-coup' (lol) a pick.
Picked janko instead.
Oh well.

Free agency is a two way street, the player has to want to come to Calgary too.
Besides, evaluating in hindsight isn't really fair. Do you think Flames fans would have been praising Treliving for signing Khudobin to be a starter in 2018?
Would Varlamov be performing without Trotz and Korn?

That would be a rematch from the 1981 Stanley Cup Final.
