The other factor on this trade, going forward, is remaining money and the chance of retirement.

Neal has $17.25M left on a $28.75M contract. So he has received 40% of his contract and he has a lot of cheques left to cash. And he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to walk away from salary because he hasn't been playing well.

Lucic has $13M left on a $42M contract. And in a couple of months he'll get a bonus and there will only be $10M left. So he will have received 76% of his contract. On top of that, he has already contemplated retirement when things weren't going well, so he has shown that is something that he would consider if he thought it was the right thing to do.

So there is a significantly greater chance that Lucic hangs them up prior to his contract ending than Neal.

And early retirement improves the trade significantly.

I don't see why Lucic wouldn't waive his NMC, it's not like Seattle will pick a player with his contract. And if he does get picked, Seattle is closer to home than Calgary.

Ultimately it matters what you get done. But that makes it sound like he wasn't actively trying to improve the team.
We know he was.

Saying "his inability to make the team better for the last 2 years" is a fair comment. "Sitting on his hands" isn't accurate.

I don’t see the point of arguing he tried and failed but to be pedantic, I will concede the point he did not sit on his hands and tried to do one thing we are aware of. Which changes nothing.

Especially with next season being in some kinda bubble no fan scenario

Certainly he tried to do more than one thing.
But yes no point arguing.

Lucic has taken over as leader and most powerful personality on this team.

Why would he waive or retire? He has found his hockey home and is having a better time in hockey than thought possible 2 years ago.

If he does waive he has a good chance of being claimed.

He would retire because he has already made most of the money and doesn't need the grind. He almost retired last fall

Is "getoverit" as a user similar to "this post is terrible"
Meaning if that poster thanks my post is he really telling me to "getoverit"?
If so that's brilliant.

Yeah we know Tree has been trying. Hell, he was also in on Evander Kane. As well as rumours of Brodie/Barrie swap this season.

He's been trying, and failing to execute because it's hard to do.

Which really is the tale of the Calgary Flames. Our GM is trying, our players are trying, our coaches are trying...they just keep failing.

Sounds like you do think there is a point arguing. I’m not sure making an offer in trade negotiations is akin to doing something but I guess we have different thresholds.

Sitting on his hands is a figure of speech. Anyway I will also concede that he made four trade offers over 2 years. He also traded for Lucic and signed Talbot. Bought out and re-signed Stone too. And a few others.

He almost retired because he felt he was not wanted and disrespected.

Now he is a vital cog in the Flames success. He is having a good time. There is not a team in the league that would not want him for the playoffs.

Yes, but the point that I think you're missing is that there is still 3 years left on his contract, and 3 years is a very long time.

No one is suggesting that he is going to retire now, but 2 years from now?... we'll see

I’m not aiming to be argumentative but the expression largely refers to someone who is choosing to be idle. So it’s an inaccurate way to describe this situation.
Same with saying that he tried to do “one thing” when that’s not the case.
One can criticize him for not getting anything done
But that’s different from accusing of him not even trying
That’s my point

The retirement thing is overblown on the basis of a single comment in a single interview

To my recollection the Flames have never retained salary in a transaction, at least not one with term left, but you have to wonder if Lucic is starting to become tradeable if the Flames were to retain a couple million.

I don't see the Flames wanting to do this unless they have big plans on the go to add salary, but if Lucic' play continues to trend up, you have to think he's not an unmovable object at $3 million AAV or so. (unless he won't waive his NMC lol)

But is say $2 million of dead money better than Lucic at $5.25? I suppose it is if you’re against the cap.

If the Flames retain salary in a deal, I hope it’s more about getting something than getting rid of something.
