EDIT: Here's just the McMahon renderings document: https://pub-calgary.escribemeetings....cumentId=91126

Note, it is from 2012, so the Olympic Bid Exploration Committee's report from 2017 is 5 years newer (and my personal preference).

BTW, for those who didn't get to watch the whole meeting yesterday, the city has posted the livestream video: https://pub-calgary.escribemeetings....2019-07-28.mp4

The whole discussion begins at: 9:29:46

It was mentioned a few times in this thread, Councillor Gondek's comments, where she takes Farkas (and others) to task starts at 12:49:35.

Any possibility of a 4K Blu Ray release?

Gondek is awesome. She's exactly who people hoped Farkas would be, with the new blood and the gusto, but without the grandstanding and the asshattery. Farkas is a tool. It's so sad that he'll likely "incumbent" his way through 8-12 years of sitting on City Council. Man it would be nice if Calgarians were a bit more ruthless with their votes, and willing to get rid of clownshoes like him, instead of the likely re-election based on name alone.

Understand the concerns around optics for those who don’t understand the complexities and terminology of a municipal budget (sorry if that’s condescending, not intended) but its just bad timing, nothing more. Irrelevant in the big picture. Regardless, no doubt all the more devastating for those who are losing their jobs and seeing an investment like this, extremely unfortunate.

That said, hearing some of the arguments from callers on different radio stations today, online, etc are exactly the reason i feel some decisions are better off made without extensive public input.

Public Consultation.

Yeah, we the public should get a vote on every rivet, screw and pour of concrete.

I want to discuss the environmental impact of the cement trucks being used and whether all timber being used is Certified Green Harvested and that there be options in the food court for those who cant eat anything that casts a shadow and has to be kissed by mother Gaia herself.

We have lots to discuss, we'd better get started!!!
Does this mother Gaia make dumplings? Are they sold at Costco?

Do the inverted bowl, just have a larger lower bowl ratio like many arenas now with the traditional build, then the stacked upper bowl/balconies would have less seating but unparalleled views compared to the typical nosebleeds.

If it does accommodate 18k or in that ballpark, which would be the goal, I would absolutely go for it. Having the first of a new revolutionary design is the way to set yourself apart, rather than just attempting to be as good as Rogers Place but with adequate bathroom sizes.

We can one up everybody in the game, and you would have the ASGs, drafts and major acts lining up out the door to come through here to be a part of it.

Great points. If you don't have satisfactory information, ask for clarification or do the homework. That's kind of your job. They just stood there and laced their speeches with not so subtle accusations towards volunteers as if they weren't approaching this in the interest of the city, but had CSEC badges on.

Just like she said, nothing would've satisfied those in question. Indeed thanks to the team that worked many hours in figuring this out, as it clearly wasn't something just thrown together in a week.

Too bad she wasn't able to physically drop a mic there.

I watched Farkas and Gondek speak, full marks to her for dressing him down.

That said did she not just pull her own stunts a month ago when the Mayor couldn’t be located for 24hrs?

I just feel they all do this. Those who share your beliefs get a pass, and those that don’t are clowns.

I just honestly believe they all do it.

You can really tell who has mayoral aspirations.

Yup. 2021 could be an interesting campaign, especially if Nenshi doesn't run again.

Missed the Gondek verbal assault on Farkas. What a knockout punch.
Farkas is a clown and it was well deserved.

I doubt he runs. He knows his time here is done and he won’t want the defeat on his record. I expect he says he’s not running and he will focus on other opportunities. Will resurface Federally.

I saw that differently. She did not know that Nenshi was going out of town, and slipped to the media that it pissed her off. Farkas does this regularly, in a calculated way.

While not a perfect analogy, there is a real opportunity for Calgary to end up with the arena equivalent of Camden Yards (which is still awesome 25 years after opening), while Edmonton will have the equivalent of the SkyDome (which was celebrated initially but felt dated within five years).

Not convinced we see the inverted bowl...unless the claims of less materials ergo lower costs actually bear out (have to imagine those costs are offset by engineering costs), it seems like a lot of additional expenditure for minimal revenue generation...can the market bear a premium on those seats?

As for McMahon, I still favour the Stampede Grandstand (ie. another relatively simple grandstand across the way). Not sure Stampede really, really wants to keep the chucks going in perpetuity, but they are also definitely not going to move away from it based on activist pressure alone. The horse track eats up a mighty chunk of real estate to only be used 10 nights a year (and is only half of the 'evening show' ticket). With a demolished Saddledome, it would give them a more interesting plot of land to play with.

Could be as easy as splitting the rodeo into two sessions a day (it's already a bloody marathon), but lots of options for how Stampede would arrange their various ticketed events (move concert series to stadium, enhanced grandstand show to arena).

Do they not still have horse racing at Stampede Park?
