I hope there is a memorial at Les Halles or something. Something like a pile of stuffed bunnies and flowers but cooler. He deserves it.

Les Halles closed last year, and I just found out that Carlos, Anthony's successor, died in 2015 of cancer at 38.
Jesus ####ing christ this whole thing is a factory of sadness.

I've watch Tony since his No Reservation days that makes it about 10 years that I've travelled vicariously through his show. Him showing that the world is grand and full of people sharing and valuing common things is certainly something I will miss. Every once in a while I'd find myself saying "When's Tony on again" - sadly that answer is never again.
I follow him on Twitter and I will say he seems to have changed a lot since his divorce. After he met Asia Argento and her involvment in the metoo movement he seemed to be more political. Very ascerbic and relentless in his condemnation. Valid comments but it seemed to be quite vicious for him.
His shows seemed to have plateaued the last season or so too. Some episodes were fine, but there seemed to be quite a few where it felt formulaic and he seemed to be going through the motions. Still a bad Bourdain episode was still good, so I'd watch regardless. I'll miss this.
Be it George Gosbee, or Kate Spade - I don't think people here understand that the spiral of depression has anything to do with success or wealth. We all have problems that differ by our lot in life. Fundamentally they are all problems that can overwhelm us. It is a tunnel for which it seems there is no end, except for one final exit that just seems like the best way out.

Like others, my favourite part of his shows was when he would sit and break bread with people from other cultures. He shined a light on how much we have in common when most news shows are bleak portrayals of our differences.
I loved his taste in music too. from the New York Dolls to Josh Homme & Mark Lanegan (who sing the Parts Unknown theme).

RIP Anthony Bourdain
One of the few people I actually considered a hero in this world. I've read all of his books, watched his shows and had the privilege of meeting the man at his book signing where he was very engaging, kind and so very dam funny. I wish he would have received the help he obviously needed, suicide is a needless permanent act to what should be a temporary issue. I've had his Chef crest as my avatar ever since I joined CP, it has been a real sad day.

Glad to see Flames_Gimp "In the sin bin" Thank you Mods for removing the distraction from this thread.
F_G I hope you can use the time off to really think about what you have said and how it comes across. I'm not familiar with your situation, but judging from what I've heard and the fact that you attempted this, all be it 30 years ago, should at the very least give you a unique and understanding perspective on this issue. I hope you can be more sympathetic going forward as you don't know what was going on in this mans life apart from what you saw on T.V. I respect that you have the right to your opinion but sometimes you need to pick your moments as to what you say and how you say it. This thread/time was not the right moment. If you'd like to talk more, send me a PM, happy to hear your views and offer mine as well.

CNN is airing a special show called "Remembering Anthony Bourdain" right now that started at 8. I just found out and was able to rewind it on my PVR but I can't record it as it's now no longer life. Hopefully it will be replayed.

That was hard to watch.
I believe it'll be replayed on Sunday along with his last show from Berlin.

The No Reservations episode in Sydney introduced me to the amazing tiger pie at Harry’s Cafe de Wheels. I’m thinking I need to eat one in Bourdain’s honour.

Is anyone else a little surprised at how popular he was? I honestly had no idea. Not right or wrong, good or bad, just surprised. I had no idea he meant this much to people.
Obviously sad whenever anybody feels they truly have no way out.

Shocked and sad, Years back I tuned in just to see what disgusting "foods" he would chomp down but then it changed to watching his amazing way to get anyone on the planet to laugh with him. The way he could turn a simple story into a wonderful story was just awesome stuff.
I think the CIA should have hired him to fight terrorism.
RIP

Personally for me, his show pushed me into incredible travel experiences by trying things a different way. I'm sure this is the case for thousands upon thousands of other travelers. He's probably made so many people's lives better and got them to try things that have formed amazing memories in their lives. Lonely Planet when I was a young punk, and Anthony Bourdain when I actually had the means to travel. Pretty major influences.
It's a pretty big deal.

Yeah, kinda to be honest. I'd seen clips of his show here and there and just wrote him off as an opinionated Jeremy Clarkson type blowhard. I guess I misjudged him? Reading this thread certainly wants to make me check out his past shows/books.

He was opinionated. But one thing he clearly didn't have time for, and mocked quite regularly, was the "Celebrity Chef" circle jerk that exists. He was pretty grounded and pretty much the antithesis of pretentious. He would eat fine dining and enjoy it if warranted, but the majority of the time it was small places, street vendors, family style eating.

Kitchen Confidential was such a great book, and I read it when I had been working in restaurants for a few years but was still quite young. The way he described all the people he knew and worked with in the business was just so universal. I know I've identified with most of the chef archetypes described in the book and I've worked with all the various types at some point (currently I'd describe myself as a "mercenary chef").
There's one bit from that book that would pop into my head at the start of every day during the 4 years I was a head chef, and I would quote it directly if only I had a copy handy. It's the part where he is going through his day in the life, at the start of the day. Waking up at an ungodly hour after not enough sleep, and then lying there in bed fully awake, his mind buzzing with all the little things that need to be done at the restaurant that day. Every morning I would wake up at 4am and immediately my head would flood with all these little things: Who is on my morning crew today? What items are we running out of? What piece of equipment is currently broken? Who am I training/trialing today? When are my deliveries coming in? Did I remember to order that crucial item in the delivery? And then off I would go. That is the part of the book I identified with the most.
