I can't remember the last time Canada got lit up like this in international play. This is embarrassing.

Cap'n McDummy takes a 4 minute penalty with 8 minutes left. That's some great leadership.

Hockey World: "After completely crapping the bed this season, I can't imagine the Oilers' roster getting down any lower. I guess the good news is that there's nowhere to go but up."

McDavid, Nugent-Hopkins, Nurse: "Hold our beers."

With the loss, Canada drops into 4th place in Group B (Denmark is in third, but has played one more game).

  • The US leads the group with 13 points. They have games remaining against Norway and Finland.

  • Finland is second in the group with 12 points. Their remaining games are against Germany and the US.

  • Denmark is third in the group with 11 points. They have one game left against Latvia.

  • Canada is in fourth with 10 points. They have two games remaining, Monday vs Latvia and Tuesday against Germany.

Assuming there are no major upsets, the USA-Finland game is going to determine Canada's fate.

If Canada wins its remaining games in regulation, they'll finish with 16 points. If Finland defeats Germany in regulation, they'll have 15 points going into the game against the US. If the US defeats Norway in regulation, they'll have 16 points going into the game against Finland.

The tiebreaker is the head-to-head game, so Canada will finish below the the US or Finland if they were to end up tied with either one. That means that Canada will need the US to win in regulation to finish second in the Group. A Finnish regulation win would leave Canada and the USA tied. A USA OT/SO win would leave Canada and Finland tied. A Finnish OT/SO win would give both teams more points than Canada.

Obviously, any unexpected results in the other games would mess this up.

Barring any major upsets, Canada basically can't win the Group at this point, so their best hope is to finish second (which will mean a likely matchup against the Czechs in the quarterfinal). If they finish third, it will be a game against the loser of the Sweden-Russia game that will end group play.

Turris will be joining Team Canada.

Too bad it's goaltending where they could use the help.

I recall reading after Canada adding Vlasic, that they have two further roster slots. Turris takes it down to 1. Surely Team Canada can find a goalie better than the garbage they have now. Give them a first class ticket, a couple days rest and prepare for the round robin. Sure they'd have to do it by tomorrow. And here's hoping they made a lot of phone calls.

Haven't watched a game, so this is admittedly under-informed, but. . . .

Everyone dancing with glee over Canada's failure because of the Oilers factor better keep in mind that it's Calgary's newly minted, 3-year-contract-carrying, coach steering the ship

Mcdavid has outstanding speed and great skill, but if its a game that I need to win, he's not a guy to count on.

He's also become really repetitive in terms of how he plays the game.

I found it pretty disgraceful that as the Oilers Captain he was glorying in his team focusing on winning the scoring title instead of the team actually developing good work and game habits at the end of the year.

I have this feeling that if the Oilers dud out again next year with McDavid making 12.5 of their payroll that the fans in Edmonton will turn on him pretty quick.

I'm also going to say this and emphasize it

NOT GENERATIONAL

Well he is stuck with a bunch of Oilers and a goaltending tandem that would get blown out in a street hockey game played by 12 year olds so there's that.

Yea, I honestly wouldn't pin too much of that loss on the coach. Their goaltending let them down early. Peters pulled McBackup immediately after the 2nd Finland goal, so at least he made an attempt to wake up the team. It also doesn't help when your best players are invisible the entire game.

Again, I haven't watched a game, so am not blaming Peters at all. . . . . Buuut. . . . .

After spending two years with people trying to defend a coach in spite of his team's failures, it's disappointing to be starting the next coach's era doing the same thing, even if it's not behind the Flames bench :-(

I'm not really reading much into world championship resumes.

Its a shinny tournament with little intensity more bum teams then good teams and the coach is trying to bring together a roster of players from losing teams that are air dropped in at the last moment.

Its far and away different from coaching an NHL team where you have a lot of time to game plan based on the players that you have, and build the team that you want to build.

Because this is a Canadian all star team of players from loser teams dropped in a week or so ahead of time, the coach is basically stuck with a rudimentary game plan and the job of yelling "Change em up"

Peter's performance here has very little impact on his NHL job.

Even with things like the World Juniors there are months and camps to bring a team into alignment and into focus.

The world Championships is meh, half of the players accept so that they can stay on the ice and bring their wives and girlfriends on an all paid vacation to Europe.

Way too many Oilers and past Oilers. Their stench is evident on this roster
