I've run out of craps to give about this team this season, so I just wanted to say this: congratulations Matt on your 1000 game. It's very well deserved and the interviews i read on this topic only made me like you more. The series winning goal versus the Canucks is one of my fondest memories through my almost 30 years of fandom. I'm proud to be a fan of such a character guy.

There are other issues of course, but this one drives me insane. Especially since it is the exact opposite of what Gulutzan said his system would be when he was hired.

This drove me crazy about the flames for years and years. Then Hartley’s pressure system created tight gap control and you could see the change overnight. D were breaking up plays and moving the puck up ice quickly. You need that now that teams carry the puck in instead of dump and chase. Doesn’t surprise me that Gulutzan hasn’t clued into that, honestly he has been way over his head from the beginning. He wants the D to retrieve pucks and then flip them out to center ice, because 26.7% of 5v5 goals are scored when the D fail to clear the puck out of their zone after getting possession. Or some bs like that. Teams don’t dump pucks much anymore so it’s simply a terrible system.

To add to this, Gulutzan has his dmen use the slide (which Desjardins taught him) instead of patrolling between the faceoff dots (which Hartley did).

In the offensive zone, the D does not pinch enough on loose half-wall pucks. This allows the opposition to cheat a forward into the middle of the ice for a counter attack once it's inevitably retrieved.

Tonight, one of the most dangerous chances came on a Gaudreau breakaway from a stretch pass. Gulutzan rarely employs this, which makes them predictable.

Well at least if the Islanders hit with our pick, it drops down the Oilers and Canucks

Positives:
- no more Matt Stajan (finally)
- probably no more Brouwer (thank god)
- GG gone

Negatives:
-goaltending still an enormous question mark
-players lack noticeable effort/heart
-we need another player who can score goals

If Tre doesn't fire gulu spectacularly I think he should be canned too. Burke should be let go either way so we can use the money going towards him to pay an actual head coach instead of the wet cardboard cutout that stands on our bench

My question is "how is that working for you?" In my opinion, Treliving needs to fire the entire coaching staff immediately. This coaching staff deserves no respect, no respectful exit. Send a message to the players now, who have obviously quit on their coach. Burke and Treliving and some of the players can learn about their fates when the season ends. I don't mind Treliving sticking around and i'm "meh" on Burke.
I hope GG makes it to the end of the year for only one reason. this would be the first time since expansion no coaches were fired during the season.

Flames firmly in Eakins-era Oiler Bad territory now.

The players better get used to the boos.

Flames fans get a taste of what oiler fans have "enjoyed" for 10 years.

at least nobody threw a jersey on the ice.

I fell asleep after the second goal. That extra hour of sleep was so worth it.

Smith is a up and down goalie I said this when they signed him it was a waste , he had a ok year not great which means next year he will be horrible. And here we're out of playoffs And we traded so many quality picks for meh Hamonic major dissappointment for what we gave up , and inexcusable for not having that pick lottery protected.

Smith is fine but has a history of not playing complete seasons for one reason or another and the Flames rode him too much. If they don't trust Rittich or Gillies (and thats a reasonable assumption at this point) then they'll go out and get a 1B vet to take 30-40 starts next year.

Flames would have been out of it in November without Smith. A waste? Who better could they have got?

I hear a lot of I told you so's and not many answers

Hamonic deal was generally praised by all media and most fans. I'm sure people are coming out of the woodwork now.

Both TSN and Sportnet had the Flames top 5 improved teams heading into this season.

Players and coach really let BT down. Team isn't perfect but it's better than this.

I think that Smith is a fine #1 goalie. Again, I put the blame on lack of success on Gulutzan. The style of play and personnel decisions led to a lot of inconsistencies and for the most part Smith was able to bail out the team. In my opinion, there were some games/situations where Smith should have been pulled and wasn't and other games where Smith should have sat out but he was the starter. These are coaching issues and not the fault of the goalie. I don't see goaltending as a major concern for this team in the off season.
